When you think of hazardous pastimes some of the first ones that come to mind are probably rock climbing, base jumping, caving, scuba diving, sailing, etc. Well one thing that always tickles me is that even horse riding can be considered hazardous when you apply for insurance!
Whether you are into water sports, motor sports or private aviation the questions that you will be asked will be specifically tailored to what you do. Here are a few common questions that are likely to be asked when you apply for insurance:
- What is your pastime?
- Do you do this within the UK or abroad?
- How many years experience do you have?
- Do you hold any qualifications?
- Do you do the activity on a solo or group basis?
- Do you participate in competitions?
Life Insurance – widely available, specific insurers look upon different pastimes more favourably than others, so you should be selective as to who you approach for the cover.
Critical Illness Cover – widely available, depending upon the perceived risks of your pastime, it is possible that the insurer will exclude claims caused by your hobby.
Income Protection – widely available, many providers will exclude claims related to your hobby, it is worthwhile shopping around for an insurer that will cover your pastime.
Private Medical Insurance – widely available, ensure that your policy covers your pastime, and if required, provides international cover.
