When you have had a stroke the insurer is going to want to ask you a number of questions to establish the severity of your condition.
Some common questions include:
- What type of stroke did you have? Stroke, mini-stroke (TIA) or subarachnoid haemorrhage?
- How old were you when it happened?
- How many times have you had the condition?
- Were there any specific causes for the event e.g. high blood pressure, the pill?
- Have you been left with any lasting symptoms?
It is likely that the insurer will want to speak with your GP to confirm the details of your condition, and your continued health. This should not cause you any concern and we see this as a positive step when arranging insurances. By speaking with your GP, you have the comfort of knowing that the insurer has a clear picture of your medical history before the insurance is put in place.
Life Insurance – widely available, if you are under the age of 41 you may need to look at more specialist providers for the cover.
Critical Illness Cover – limited options, if it is available on the standard market there will most likely be an exclusion placed on the policy for any claims related to the condition. For most cases cover will need to be arranged with a specialist insurer.
Income Protection – limited options, you will probably find that cover is restricted to short-term claim policies with an exclusion for stroke related claims.
Private Medical Insurance – generally available, most policies will exclude any claim related to your existing medical history, for at least a couple of years.
