Freediving & Life Insurance
Free diving can be an exhilarating experience and it takes quite a bit of skill to do. You might be freediving for a couple of minutes at at a time or much longer.
There are quite a few things about your free-diving that an insurer will like to know about when you apply for life insurance.
When you speak to our advisers we will ask you:
- How often do you free dive?
- What is the maximum depth that you dive to?
- Are you usually in a group or solo?
- Where in the world are you freediving?
- Do you take part in competitions?
Your life insurance application might be accepted at normal terms if you don’t dive regularly and are not going particularly deep in the water.
You are likely to find that some insurers will increase the cost of your life insurance if you are going into deep waters, exploring wrecks or taking part in competitions.
Our award winning advisers will find the right insurer for you so that you get the best life insurance possible.
Freediving & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover can be available to free divers with some insurers.
You might find that your critical illness cover is offered with an exclusion for any claim related to your diving. This could mean that if you were to experience something like a heart attack or stroke whilst free-diving, that a claim will not payout. This kind of exclusion will depend upon how extreme your free diving is and the insurer you use.
Our expert advisers are here to get you the best critical illness cover that you can have.
Freediving & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
When insuring your income sports like free diving do often pop up in the insurer’s questions. The insurer will be wanting to figure out if your free-diving puts you at a higher risk of making a claim on the policy.
You will probably be asked if you have had any time off work in the last few years for any health condition or injuries that you’ve had.
It is essential that your income protection is placed with an insurer that can accept your diving as a risk that they are prepared to take. You could find that some insurers won’t offer you income protection.
That’s why we have built a team of expert advisers that can make sure that your income protection application goes to the right insurer straight away.
Freediving & Travel Insurance
It’s quite likely that you are freediving outside of the UK. It’s always best to make sure that travel insurance doesn’t exclude claims relating to diving. You can find out more details at our travel insurance page.

Common Questions
Hi, thank you for reaching out to us. When you apply for life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection, most insurers will ask at some stage if you are taking part in any professional sports. It sounds like you do.
This can mean that you need to be very selective over the insurers that you place your applications with. Your options for insurance will really depend upon how extreme your dives are. If you are going for world records or large depths, you might need to speak with specialist insurers to get your cover.
Our advisers can access these insurers for you, but you never know, your diving might not be a huge concern to insurers and there are more options than you think.
