Helicopter Pilots & Life Insurance
Life insurance for helicopter pilots may be available at normal terms. This is most likely if you are based within the UK and use an insurer who offers good underwriting terms for your occupation as a pilot.
To check this for you our advisers will ask you:- What industry do you work in?
- How many hours do you fly in a year?
- How many hours have your logged in the air to date?
- Where do you fly the helicopter?
If you work as a helicopter pilot for an offshore company then the insurer may want you to detail the locations that you travel to as part of your work.
The insurer will be particularly interested if you pilot any experimental or test helicopters as part of your job.
If your occupation requires you to fly prototype helicopters it is possible that any offer of life insurance that will be available to you will be at non-standard terms.
If you are a reservist in the armed forces this may affect the terms of life insurance available to you and you should discuss this with your insurance advisor.
If you are a member of the armed forces please visit our dedicated occupation page here.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover for helicopter pilots may be available at standard terms. The insurer that you approach for critical illness cover will review your application based on your individual circumstances.
Depending upon where you fly and how much airtime that you log, the insurer may offer critical illness cover with an occupation exclusion.
An occupational exclusion means that you will be unable to place a claim for any critical illness that you develop due to your working duties.
It is worthwhile noting that many conditions covered by a critical illness contract are not something that could be caused by your occupation e.g. multiple sclerosis, cancer, etc. So whilst an occupational exclusion may not sound ideal, it certainly does not outweigh the benefit that this type of cover can provide.
Our award winning advisers are here to make sure that you get the best critical illness contract.
Helicopter Pilots & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for helicopter pilots may be available with a few insurers but you will need to be very selective of the insurer that you use.
Quite a few insurers will not be able to offer you income protection due to your work. This is because you need to be in incredibly good health to be allowed to fly, so it doesn’t take much for you to be told that you can’t do your job.
The insurer will want to know if you fly within the UK or abroad, how much annual air time you do and whether you have had any periods of time off work in the past due to your health.
Our advisers will talk to you about your needs and find the right way to protect your income.
