Yellow Fever & Life Insurance

Yellow Fever & Life InsuranceGoing on holiday is always lovely but there are times that things can go wrong. Sometimes you can pick up different illnesses, stomach bugs, sunburn and on occasion yellow fever.

It’s possible to get life insurance at standard terms if you have had yellow fever and we will search the insurance market to find the best life insurance for you.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • When did you have yellow fever?
  • Have you fully recovered from yellow fever?
  • Are your liver and kidney function tests now in normal ranges?

Life insurance after you have had yellow fever is most likely if you have fully recovered from this. Insurers will be interested to know if the yellow fever has caused you any long term symptoms, if you need ongoing treatment and if your liver and kidneys are working normally.

Insurers might link yellow fever to higher risk travel. They will be interested to know where you have travelled to in the last 3-5 years and where you plan on travelling in the next couple of years. If you have been or intend to be outside of the UK for more than 30 days in countries linked to yellow fever, this can also have an impact on obtaining life insurance. You can find out more about high risk travel here.

If you have fully recovered from the yellow fever it is likely that you will be able to get life insurance at standard terms. If you liver or kidneys are still not working at normal levels, then you could find that you need to speak with a specialist life insurance provider for your life insurance.

Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

When you apply for critical illness cover and you’ve had yellow fever, the insurers will want to know that you are fully recovered. Thus usually means that  your liver and kidneys are functioning normally.

If there are any ongoing difficulties or if you are taking any medications to help with your liver and/or kidneys, this might make it a bit harder to get critical illness cover. This is because there are specific claims that you can make in critical illness policies that are linked to liver failure and kidney failure.

If you still have symptoms of yellow fever it’s likely that most insurers will say that they need to wait until they can consider your critical illness application. You might be told that your critical illness application is postponed or declined.

Our award winning advisers are here to make sure that you get the right insurer to match you and your health.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

If you had yellow fever in the past and have fully recovered, then getting income protection should be available with some insurers in the UK.

If you have any long term complications from yellow fever e.g. liver and/or kidney issues, the most insurers will want to wait until they are back at normal function, before offering income protection.

Our advisers are here to make sure that you get the best insurance policy to protect your income.

What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a severe illness transmitted through mosquito bites and is found mainly in specific regions of sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and Central America. If you plan on travelling to an area with a potential risk of contracting yellow fever, it is advisable to receive a yellow fever vaccination.

These symptoms usually last about 3 or 4 days. However, in a minority of cases, individuals may develop more severe symptoms such as, jaundice, dark urine, abdominal pain, and abnormal bleeding. Yellow fever can be life-threatening.

Linked with: Liver failure, kidney failure, coma

Some of the symptoms people may experience having had yellow fever:

  • Diet restrictions
  • Jaundice
  • Lifestyle restrictions
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Ibuprofen
  • Paracetamol

Common Questions

Hi, thank you for reaching out to us. I’m sorry to hear that you have been declined life insurance. If you have fully recovered from the yellow fever then we would usually expect you to be able to get life insurance at standard terms.

It would be really helpful to chat with you about some things that might have led the insurer to this decision. This will be questions about your liver and kidney, if they asked to see a report from your doctor to assess your application and if you have a copy of this report.

Let’s arrange a time to speak next week and put a plan together.
