Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) & Life Insurance
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) can be incredibly unpleasant and the last thing you really want is to have these infections turn your life insurance application into a hassle as well.
The good news is that for most people who’ve had UTIs, it will have little bearing on their life insurance application.
You will probably need to provide some information about your history of UTIs to any prospective life insurance provider, especially if they have occurred recently. Some of the information we’ll need to get from you as a part of the process includes:
- How frequently do you have UTIs?
- Have you fully recovered?
- Information about any tests carried out
- Did you require any treatment or medication?
If tests have uncovered any related secondary conditions, then it’s possible that an insurer will want to see a report from your GP, which they’ll obtain at their own expense.
For most people that have experienced UTIs, it is likely that life insurance will be available at normal terms.
If your UTIs have been caused by another condition, have a look at our other health pages, to find out more about how they might impact upon any application.
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
If you’ve had infrequent urinary tract infections, then it’s likely that critical illness cover will be available at standard terms with many providers.
If, however, you’ve had regular flare ups and recurrences, or there are other conditions causing your infections, an insurer is likely to review your application in more detail and may seek a medical report from your GP.
Where your UTIs are caused by a secondary condition such as diabetes or HIV, it’s this secondary condition that will be the biggest focus of any further assessment by an insurer. To find out how those conditions might impact your application, use our health conditions search facility to find the information about that specific condition and how it might affect any application for critical illness cover.
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Much like with life insurance and critical illness cover, any application for income protection is likely to be largely unaffected, if you’ve only ever suffered infrequent UTIs and they’ve been resolved quickly.
In these cases, cover will typically be available at normal terms.
But again, in cases where you’ve suffered frequent flare ups or where the infections have been caused by another condition such as diabetes or HIV, any prospective insurer might seek to speak with your GP, or that you need to look at a specialist insurer for the cover.
If you have regular UTIs or they have caused you to have time off work in the past, it is possible that the insurer may offer income protection at non-standard terms, or we may need to look at specialist insurers for you.
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) & Travel Insurance
Don’t let your experience of UTIs make your holiday preparation a hassle. If you’re looking for travel insurance for a holiday or overseas trip, speak to a specialist. Find out more by visiting our travel page here.

Common Questions
In cases like yours, where recurrent urinary tract infections have been brought about by diabetes, the insurer will be more interested in the diabetes side of things. They will want to know what type of diabetes you have, your latest HbA1C reading, blood pressure, cholesterol, and if you have any additional complications.
You can use our health condition finder to find the right page about your specific type of diabetes and find out more there about how that condition is likely to affect your application for life insurance.
