Life Insurance for Skin Cancer
A skin cancer diagnosis can leave people feeling vulnerable, scared and frustrated. With so much information to take in, it’s not unusual for people to feel overwhelmed and unsure of what comes next.
But having recovered from skin cancer, you can start preparing for the future, making sure you and your family are financially protected moving forward. This is where we specialise and our trusted advisers are on hand to provide the support and guidance you need.
So, if you’ve had skin cancer and would like our help to find the best life insurance, here’s what we’d need to know:
- How long ago you had skin cancer
- Whether or not you still have it
- The grading and staging of the cancer
- The type of treatment you received
- The last time you underwent treatment
- Whether you have been given the all-clear
If you have been diagnosed and treated for skin cancer, protecting you and your family for the future will always be a priority and our experienced team are on hand to help you find the best life insurance policy to meet your needs. So if you have experienced skin cancer and are now looking for life insurance, we will take the time to learn about your individual situation.
We understand that there are certain things insurance providers will want to know including the grading/staging of the cancer, the treatment you received and when your treatment ended.
They will also be keen to understand the specific type of skin cancer you had, whether it was basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), melanoma or another form. And please don’t be alarmed if you are asked to give permission for a medical report from your GP. This is not unusual and simply provides the information required to assess your application.
The good news is that if you had skin cancer some time ago and it was of a low staging/grading, you may be able to secure a policy on standard terms. If on the other hand, the skin cancer was a high staging/grading and you have only recently completed your treatment, we may be looking at life insurance at non-standard terms, which means some form of a higher premium and it is our job to find you the policy that does this the least!
Either way, we can help you to explore the options and work out which is the right and most viable route for you. We’ll search the market to find you the best life insurance options meaning you won’t have to speak to lots of people or liaise with different companies.
And if you currently have skin cancer, there are some insurance options for you too. These would be with a specialist provider and your policy would be likely to exclude any claims relating to skin cancer.
Skin Cancer & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
When you are diagnosed with a serious illness, we understand that it can come with shock as well as worry, anxiety and even anger. For most people, receiving a diagnosis isn’t expected and once recovered, your thoughts will turn to the future and making sure that you and your family are protected.
If you’ve had skin cancer in the past and have completed your treatment, our team can help you to find the best critical illness cover to meet your needs. There could be a number of insurers that will consider your application, it’s about knowing which ones to approach.
During the application process, insurers may want to see a medical report from your GP but don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. They will also take into account the staging and grading of the cancer, the type of treatment you received and the time since your last treatment.
If this was a while ago, and the skin cancer was of a low grading/staging then standard terms for critical illness cover could be a possibility – depending on the type of skin cancer. For a diagnosis with a high grading/staging and where treatment was only completed more recently, a cancer exclusion may be placed on your policy. This could be a full exclusion or one specifically related to skin cancers.
But don’t be overwhelmed, we will work through all of this information for you and do our very best to secure your cover. There may be some circumstances, however, particularly for higher grading cancers, where insurance is either declined or postponed for a number of years from your last treatment date. At this point, we can look at using specialist insurers on your behalf.
Skin Cancer & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
For most people, having a financial plan in place is important to cover you in case you’re ever unable to work due to ill health. The good news is that securing income protection after skin cancer is sometimes possible but as with critical illness cover, it may come with a cancer exclusion to the policy.
This may only be for a set period of time and once this has passed, your insurer might be able to offer you the cover without a cancer exclusion, which is great news.
Insurers will also be keen to understand the treatment that you received and when you last received it. If a specific amount of time has passed since your treatment ended, this may also result in securing standard terms. It may seem unhelpful, but it is not easy to say how long this time period will be, as insurers set their own individual timeframes on these matters. This is why it is really important to search the market.
If, on the other hand, the skin cancer was of a high grading/staging, it required more recent treatment and/or has resulted in lasting complications, we may need to look at cover with special terms. This could mean a cancer exclusion on the policy, as mentioned above, and may involve a premium increase for your insurance.

In some situations, it might be that the terms for income protection don’t suit your needs but please don’t worry. We can look into other options for you such as an Accident, Sickness and Unemployment policy. This could provide monthly income replacement for between 12-24 months and as the policies are not medically underwritten, you having had skin cancer will have no bearing on the policy price or acceptance terms.
It is worthwhile noting, however, that whilst this is the case, any claim that you place will be medically assessed, and any claim relating to existing conditions will be excluded.

Common Questions
When it comes to applying for insurance, insurers always pay attention to any form of cancer that someone has experienced. They want to know everything, how big it was, how invasive it was, if it has affected your daily living or ability to work, plus a number of other things. It may not seem like it’s relevant and ultimately the insurers might agree with you in the long-run, but you must tell them about it, or it could invalidate your policy.
I know this may not sound helpful, but it really depends. Insurers are mainly bothered about health conditions that your immediate family members have had, this is your blood related mum, dad and siblings. Insurers tend to ask if family members have experienced certain medical conditions before the age of 60 or 65, which will include things like cancer, heart attack and stroke. The important thing is to find the insurer with the right questions on their application that suit your circumstances, some will ask about any cancer, some will ask about specific cancers and this will not typically include skin cancer.
