Quadriplegia & Life Insurance

Living with quadriplegia can have an influence on your life insurance options. When assessing your application for life insurance, insurers will be looking specifically at what caused your quadriplegia and also how being quadriplegic may affect your health over time.

We are here to listen to your experiences and needs as someone with quadriplegia and to help you find an insurer that supports your health and circumstances.

Some key information we’ll need includes:

  • When did your quadriplegia begin?
  • What was the cause of your quadriplegia?
  • Have you undergone or awaiting surgery?
  • Are there any complications, such as frequent urinary tract or kidney infections?

Life insurance options for people living with quadriplegia might be available with some insurers on the standard market, but you might find that your life insurance needs to be placed with specialist insurers. It is quite likely that your life insurance application will need to be supported with a medical report from your GP, which is something that the insurer will arrange and pay for with your permission.

With most insurers you will need to provide details on how long you’ve been living with quadriplegia and any other health conditions that you have.

Life insurance might be available with some insurers based upon your own specific circumstances. It is useful to know that the cost of your policy will likely be higher than what you see on price comparison sites. Whilst it is never positive to hear that your life insurance may cost more depending upon the life insurance type that you take out, it is important to be prepared for these kinds of outcomes.

Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Critical Illness Cover will not likely be available on the standard insurance market for people that are quadriplegic. There are some policies that focus more upon covering diagnosis of cancer specifically, or accidental events such that lead to blindness, deafness or a number of other situations, that might be worth considering.

Our industry trained advisers can talk through the different insurance products that you can access and let you know how they will support you.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Income Protection for individuals with quadriplegia is generally not available through standard insurance providers. However, there are specialist income protection policies you might qualify for, although the acceptance criteria can be quite strict. It’s always a good idea to explore your options, even if you ultimately decide it’s not the right fit for you.

There are policies that are known as Accident and Sickness cover that do work to protect your income, that you could arrange as there is no medical underwriting at the point of application. But, there is medical underwriting at the point of claim and the exclusions on these policies for pre-existing conditions are very extensive. For the majority of people that are living with quadriplegia we would not suggest that this type of policy would be worthwhile to you.

Our advisers will be able to give you guidance on the best ways to protect your income.

Are you going on holiday? It’s always a good idea to make sure that you have good travel insurance in place. You can find out more about getting a quote on our travel insurance page.
