Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) & Life InsuranceWe appreciate that living with Prader-Willi Syndrome may enhance the challenges of day-to-day life and you may be wondering if this will affect your life insurance. We are here to help and support you in any way possible.

There’s just a few things we’d need to know from you to get started:

  • What are your symptoms?
  • What is your height and weight?
  • Do you take medication to control this?
  • How much does the condition affect your day to day life?

Life insurance for people with Prader-Willi Syndrome is unlikely to be available with standard life insurers. This is for a mixture of reasons but it can often be linked to a very high BMI, that can lead to further health complications.

Most people will need to arrange the life insurance with specialist providers who are able to consider the application. We would strongly recommend that you speak to an insurance adviser before arranging life insurance, so that they can fully detail what you are and are not covered for with such policies.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

For most people with Prader-Willi Syndrome, critical illness cover is unlikely to be unavailable in the standard insurance market. It may be possible to arrange critical illness cover with specialist insurers, but it is essential that you fully understand what the policy does and does not cover. Our advisers can help you to understand how these policies can be useful for you as well as the limitations that come with them.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Unfortunately in most circumstances people with Prader-Willi Syndrome are often not able to have income protection insurance. There are sometimes options that can be arranged through your employer, that will offer a good quality income protection for you. There are specific eligibility criteria for this and our advisers can discuss these with you.

An alternative is to look into an accident, sickness and unemployment (ASU) policy. This policy will pay a claim if you become unable to work because of a disability, involuntary redundancy or long term injury. If you are unable to work because of a disability, involuntary redundancy or long term injury, you may be eligible for income replacement. This is a short term policy that lasts between 12-24 months and is not medically underwritten at the time of application. Any claims that you make on this policy will exclude your inability to work based on PWS. You must also be working a minimum 16 hours per week to be eligible for this cover.

Common Questions

Hi, it is lovely to hear from you. We have a number of options that we can look at for you if your child is 18 years old or over. We will need to speak with your child to arrange the policy. If their symptoms mean that they cannot do this with us or understand the insurances that are being arranged, we can discuss the options with you if you have a Power of Attorney in place.

First class service. Brilliant support and service throughout. Absolutely first class. Made something which is, let’s face it, kind of embarrassing when referring to getting mental health issues covered by health insurance, painless. Would 100% recommend. - 5
