POTS & Life Insurance
I have had symptoms of POTS throughout my life but was only diagnosed in my mid 30s. It certainly made quite a difference once I knew the best ways to exercise, eat and pace myself.
Insurers do like to know if you have a heart condition when you apply for life insurance and here is what you need to know.
To get things started we will ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome?
- What investigations have you had and are you due anymore?
- What medications or treatments do you do?
- How often do you experience symptoms of POTS?
- Are you able to work and do day to day activities?
When you are applying for life insurance most insurers will want you to have no outstanding tests or investigations. Once you have your diagnosis of POTS the insurer will probably want to see a report from your GP to confirm the tests that have been done and what the cardiologists found. This report is only done with your expressed permission and the insurer will pay for your GP to complete this.
If your POTS is well controlled and you do not experience symptoms often then you might be able to arrange life insurance at standard terms. If you do experience symptoms or your POTS is linked to another condition it is possible that your premiums will be increased. Life insurance for many people is very cheap so when a premium increase happens, it’s usually nowhere near as high as people think it will be.
Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.
POTS & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Insurers are particularly interested in any heart conditions when it comes to critical illness cover, because there are a few heart related claims that can be made on the policy. As with life insurance, if your POTS is well controlled you might be able to arrange critical illness cover with some insurers in the UK.
If you still experience symptoms or are having any changes to your medications, it might be that the insurer decides to postpone your application until you are settled with the new treatment.

POTS & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
With income protection insurers are very keen to know about anything that could lead to a claim. POTS can cause fatigue and other symptoms that can make working very difficult. The insurer will be considering how you are now and also be trying to guess what they think your symptoms of POTS will be like in the future.
Where your symptoms are well controlled it is possible that some insurers will consider your application. You might find that some insurers will put an exclusion on your policy in relation to the POTS and whilst this will not be positive to hear, there are still many situations where you could claim on the policy.

Common Questions
Hi, I’m sorry that you have been told that your application for life insurance has been declined. Each insurer has their own rules that they follow as to how they assess conditions and you can find that some are better for supporting people with POTS than others.
The best thing to do is for us to have a chat about your diagnosis to find out why you have been declined life insurance. It could be that your diagnosis is recent and they want to see how you react to your medications, you might have just changed your medication, or it could be other things. If the insurer had requested a report from your GP it’s a really good idea to get a copy of it, so that we can look through it for you and make sure we have everything to had when researching the market for life insurance for you.
