Pneumonia & Life Insurance

Pneumonia & Life InsuranceWhen you have had pneumonia you might worry that this could affect your options for life insurance. Or, you might think that it happened years ago so it won’t be an issue at all for life insurance.

Well, it depends.

For a lot of people arranging life insurance after having pneumonia shouldn’t be difficult, with options for life insurance at normal terms being quite likely. But there are times that getting life insurance needs some extra research.

We will do this research for you and ask you:

  • When did you experience pneumonia?
  • How many times have you had pneumonia?
  • Are you fully recovered from the pneumonia?

When you apply for life insurance and have had pneumonia, everything comes down to time and recovery. If you had pneumonia a year ago, it was a one off and you are fully recovered, it’s very likely that you will be able to arrange life insurance at standard terms.

The times where insurers potentially start to increase premiums, or decline life insurance, is if you have had pneumonia multiples times and/or it was within the last few months. Not all insurers will do this, which is why it’s really important to research who will be the best insurer for you.

If you have another medical condition that makes it more likely for you to develop pneumonia, the insurer will probably be more interested in that condition rather than the pneumonia itself. You can find a list of all the medical conditions that we have provided insight for, in our core health condition page.

Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Having pneumonia once and fully recovering with no long-term symptoms, is unlikely to cause any issues with you getting critical illness cover. Granted, if you had pneumonia 3 weeks ago, it’s possible that an insurer might want to wait another week or two, to make sure you are completely over it.

There are some claimable conditions on critical illness policies that are linked to your lungs. With this being the case, you can find that if you have had recurrent pneumonia or a condition that makes you more at risk at developing pneumonia, that insurers might increase your premiums or decline to offer the cover.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

As with the other insurances discussed on this page, if you have fully recovered from the pneumonia and it’s not linked to another health condition, you will probably be able to get income protection at standard terms.

This will depend upon how long ago it was that you experienced pneumonia. Income protection policies tend to have exclusions placed on them for health conditions you have experienced in the last few years. Not all insurers will do this and we will make sure that your income protection application is placed with an insurer that will give you the highest value cover.

Common Questions

Hi, thank you for getting in touch, it’s lovely to hear from you. It might be that we need to look at specific insurers for you, but please don’t worry. With some insurers they have quite black and white systems, so if you say you have pneumonia and have not fully recovered, the application can automatically decline the application.

We will support you and do all the research for you, so that you can get a clear idea of the right insurer and cost of life insurance, before you even do an application.

It’s might be that the insurer asks your permission to speak with your GP, just to confirm how your overall health is, before they able to consider your application. This is quite common and we have a dedicated team that will keep you up to date every step of the way.

Fantastic cover for past previous critical illness! Everyone at Cura has been absolutely fantastic in securing life insurance for me after a critical illness. They have been the only company that has been able to secure me life insurance, and have been incredibly helpful at every stage! I couldn’t recommend them any more! - 5
