MODY Diabetes & Life Insurance
Living with diabetes is something that a lot of insurers in the UK will ask you about when you apply for life insurance. The options for life insurance can be quite different depending upon the type of diabetes that you have and also how it affects your body.
Mature onset diabetes of the young can be a condition that people have and live with, without it having a big impact upon their life. There is also the possibility that it has led to some additional complications, that can influence who will be the best life insurance provider for you.
To get things started we will ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with MODY diabetes?
- What is the specific strain of mature onset diabetes of young that you have?
- What is your most recent HbA1C reading?
- What medications or treatments do you use, if any?
When you apply for life insurance the type of MODY diabetes that you have will initially be the key part to picking the right life insurer for you. If you have glucokinase mature onset diabetes, it is possible that you might be able to access life insurance at standard terms (normal pricing), dependant upon your overall health.
For any other type of mature onset diabetes of the young, you are most likely to find that life insurance comes at what is known as non-standard terms. For most life insurance policies this means a premium increase, which never sounds positive, but life insurance is usually very cheap and these increases are often still well within affordability for a lot of people.
If you have any outstanding tests or investigations, are experiencing new symptoms or your HbA1C is particularly high, you can find that mainstream life insurance providers decline your application for life insurance. We have access to a number of specialist insurance policies that you can access in these circumstances.
Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.
MODY Diabetes & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
With critical illness cover insurers tend to exclude conditions that a person already has. There are a lot of conditions that are claimable on a critical illness policy that can be linked to diabetes. We tend to see that people with type 2 diabetes can sometimes arrange critical illness cover at an increased premium, but people with type 1 diabetes cannot arrange critical illness cover with mainstream insurers.
When you have mature onset diabetes of the young, insurers tend to view your application on a case by case basis, so it is not possible to give a clear indication as to what you might be offered. This is why it is essential that your circumstances are researched with insurers before an application is put forward, as you don’t want to waste time going through all that information to find out that the insurer won’t offer you the critical illness cover.

The type of MODY diabetes that you have will determine if you can get income protection. It is quite likely that if you have any health complications due to the diabetes such as eyesight difficulties or kidney disease, that full income protection will not be available to you.
