Migraines & Life InsuranceWe appreciate that having migraines can have a big effect on your day to day life but rest assured, they don’t always have a big effect on your insurance options.

Things we need to know to get started:

  • When were you diagnosed with having migraines?
  • How frequent are your migraines?
  • Do you take any medication to control these?
  • Have you had any time off work because of them?

When you apply for life insurance, migraines may need to be detailed to the insurer, depending upon their questions. If they do ask this will include how often you experience migraines, any investigations you’ve had and medications that you use. If your migraines aren’t often and rather mild it is possible that you could secure life insurance at standard terms.

Migraines that are frequent and require stronger medication, may result in your life insurance being offered at special terms (increased premiums).

Where investigations have been needed the insurer will want to know if they’ve shown any causes for the migraines. If there are no secondary conditions life insurance is likely to remain at standard rates. If another condition is causing your migraines it is possible that your policy will be offered at an increased premium.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

When you experience migraines, critical illness cover applications will be reviewed in a similar way to life insurance. The insurer will be interested in how often you have them, how bad they are, the medications you use and the results of any tests that have been completed.

Critical illness cover may be accepted at standard terms if your migraines do not occur frequently and the symptoms are considered mild.

Where the condition occurs regularly or is being caused by another condition, you may find that the insurer offers you the policy with an increase to the premiums.

Depending upon the condition that is causing the migraines, it could be that some insurers may decline your application for critical illness cover. This is why it’s so important to find the right insurer for you straight away, which is what our advisers will help you to do.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

For people living with migraines an income protection policy can be available at standard terms if your condition is well controlled, you don’t experience them often and there have been no significant absences from work.

Where the condition has caused absence from work, the symptoms are strong or routine tests have shown a secondary cause for them, your application is likely to be accepted at special terms. This may involve an increase to the policy premiums or an exclusion for any claims related to your migraines and related conditions.

What are Migraines?

Migraines are a debilitating experience that can cause a whole host of uncomfortable symptoms. Migraines are classed as occurring with aura, without aura or without headache (silent migraine). This means that a migraine can be pre-empted by changes in physical sensations before the onset of a headache, a headache with no warning or the experience of pre-migraine symptoms with no resultant migraine. A migraine will typically last between four hours and three days and will often require the person to rest in a dark room away from noise, light and smells that can aggravate symptoms.

Common Questions

Most likely yes. Even though you’ve not had a migraine for a while, the medication will need to be disclosed, with most insurers. It also depends on how often you need to take the medication. If you are having to take your medication weekly to prevent the migraines, it may be that the insurer will ask your permission to see a report from your GP to confirm your treatment.

Having been refused life insurance through another broker, I contacted Cura who have been helpful and efficient. Their advisors were friendly, called at the arranged time and kept me updated with any progress. I can’t fault the service and would recommend. - 5
