Menopause & Life Insurance
We often speak to people that are going through the menopause and wanting insurance, and you know what, most of the time we have no idea.
This is because with most life insurance policies going through the menopause has absolutely no bearing on your application. In fact, many life insurance applications specifically state that you do not need to tell them about the menopause or HRT treatment. There are some things that can pop up in the question that might be linked to the menopause. Here are some common medical conditions that can develop:- Anxiety
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Weight gain
Menopause & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Just like life insurance you will not be asked about menopause when you apply for critical illness cover. Most insurers in the UK do not include any questions where you would need to discuss the menopause.
The applications often ask if you have taken any ongoing medication for 4 weeks or more, but this does not include HRT medications. Insurers are very aware that the menopause is a natural process that half of the population will go through.
If you are taking an alternative treatment to HRT for your menopause, under the advice of your GP, you will likely still be able to get critical illness cover at normal terms.
Our award winning advisers are here to make sure that you get the right insurer to match you and your health.
Menopause & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
When you apply for income protection menopause does not come up in the question set, but the type of medication that you take can influence your options.
If you are taking anti-depressants to help manage your symptoms these will come up in the income protection application question set. HRT doesn’t need to be detailed but anti-depressants do.
Some automated applications can make the assumption that you are experiencing a mental health condition. With income protection it is quite common for the policy to have a mental health exclusion placed on the cover, for someone that has a mental health history.
If you are in this position and take the anti-depressants purely to manage your symptoms and not as a result of mental health condition, then it’s worth challenging this decision. What you need is to get past the computer and speak to the human underwriter, so that they assess your income protection application more openly.
Our advisers are here to make sure that you get the best insurance policy to protect your income. We work directly with underwriters at multiple insurers to make sure that you get the income protection that you need.

Common Questions
Hi, thank you for getting in touch. I completely appreciate that the menopause is different for each person and some of the things that you can experience are highly personal.
With a lot of insurances the menopause doesn’t get asked about. If you have experienced things like anxiety and UTIs, these can be asked about. We approach these questions in a very sensitive way and we can always stop if things become too much.
There are some policies where no medical questions will be asked at all and we can look at them for you, but you usually get better options if you are able to talk about your health.
