Jaundice & Life Insurance

Jaundice & Life InsuranceJaundice can potentially be the sign of a life threatening condition and when you apply for life insurance, insurers will want to know more about your health.

For many people jaundice is a sign that something is not working as it should within the body, that is then quickly resolved with some treatment. There are some key things that insurers will want to check with you, before they are able to consider your application for life insurance.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • When did you have jaundice?
  • Do you know what caused the jaundice?
  • Are you now fully recovered and no longer have jaundice?

Most insurers will focus upon the cause of your jaundice rather than the jaundice itself, when assessing your life insurance application. The causes of jaundice are very varied and the options for life insurance will depend significantly upon what has led to you having jaundice.

Regardless of the cause of your jaundice, it’s quite likely that the insurer will want to see that you no longer have jaundice before they offer you life insurance. This is because it’s a really good indication to them that your body functions are getting back to where they should be.

The cause of your jaundice will determine if you can get life insurance on the standard market or with a specialist insurer. As an example, people living with sickle cell disease often have options on the standard market, but if your jaundice is caused by alcohol consumption and you still actively drinking it’s likely that a specialist insurer will be needed.

If you have newborn jaundice and it was not caused by any underlying health conditions, this should not cause any issues for you getting life insurance.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Jaundice can be linked to problems with the liver and other areas of the body, and critical illness cover usually insures people if they were to experience organ failure. This means that it can be trickier to get critical illness cover if you are currently experiencing jaundice, as it can indicate that one of your organs has some strain on it.

If you have had jaundice in the past and are fully recovered, with no lasting complication or underlying health conditions, then it’s likely that you can arrange critical illness cover on the standard market.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Income protection can have quite strict acceptance criteria as statistics show that you are far more likely to claim on this, than say you are to claim on life insurance. This means that if you actively have jaundice most insurers will not want to offer your income protection, until they feel comfortable that you are fully recovered from this. It’s worth noting that the insurer’s timeframe for fully recovered is often a bit longer than what your GP’s timeframe.

If you have had jaundice in the past and are fully recovered, you might be able to get income protection on the standard insurance market, but this will depend upon the cause of your jaundice.

What is Jaundice?

Jaundice is usually noticed when someone’s skin colour or the whites of their eyes start to look yellow. It is caused by the build up of bilirubin in the body.

Linked with: Alcohol linked fatty liver disease, hepatitis, pancreatitis, sickle cell disease

There are no specific symptoms that will affect lifestyle due to jaundice itself, but the conditions that cause jaundice can affect a person’s quality of life.

Treatments for jaundice will depend upon the underlying condition that is causing it.

Common Questions

Hi, it is lovely to hear from you. I would not usually expect an insurer to decline life insurance for jaundice that has happened that long ago. This can potentially happen for a couple of reasons. The first is that you have a health condition or lifestyle factor that is leading the insurer to decline your life insurance application.

Another reason can be that if they went for a report from your GP that there is something in there that is causing the decline. It might be that there is an error in the report that simply needs correcting. If you would like to chat more we can go through your medical history and let you know the best life insurance policy for you.
