Hodgkin Lymphoma & Life InsuranceTo receive the news that you have Hodgkin Lymphoma is a scary and anxious time. You will likely be dealing with a whole new set of emotions, whilst worrying about the future and the plans you need to make.

We are here to listen to your concerns. It is our job to answer the questions you have regarding the financial security of yourself and your loved ones. Ensuring that you and your family are taken care of financially, will be one of your main priorities.

By choosing the insurances that best suits your needs, you can get peace of mind that everything and everyone will be taken care of. Our dedicated and passionate advisers are on hand to guide you in the right direction and explain your life insurance options to you. And thanks to years of experience, our team will work with you to understand your situation and simplify the queries that are important to you, having had Hodgkin Lymphoma.

So if you have been diagnosed and treated for Hodgkin Lymphoma and would like our help to find the best life insurance, here’s what we’d need to know:

  • When did you receive your diagnosis?
  • What were your symptoms?
  • Was there any involvement of your bone marrow?
  • Have you had treatment, and if so, when?
  • What treatment did you receive?
  • When did you last have treatment?
  • Are you fully recovered and have been given the all-clear?

Applying for life insurance policy after having had Hodgkin Lymphoma is not going to be as straightforward as someone that has not had cancer. But that doesn’t mean that there are no options available to you, or that applying for life insurance will be a stressful experience. We will work with you on this and in some situations, we can also approach specialist insurers on your behalf.

For some people who have had Hodgkin Lymphoma, it may even be possible to find a policy that includes near standard terms. This will normally be down to your individual circumstances and can depend on things like the time since your diagnosis, whether you had a limited or advanced diagnosis, the treatment you received and the time since your treatment ended.

If, however, you finished your treatment more recently or the grading/staging of the cancer was more advanced, then standard terms are less likely. But please don’t worry, if this is your situation and it means that some insurers increase the premiums to a silly amount, that isn’t the end of our options. Instead, we can approach specialist insurers on your behalf which can open up a number of extra options, that do not have to cost the earth.

In either situation, insurance providers will often ask to see medical report from your GP. They will use this as part of their assessment to confirm your medical history, as well as your current health status.

And if you currently have Hodgkin Lymphoma, there are some insurance options for you too. These would be with a specialist provider and your policy would be likely to exclude any claims relating to the cancer.

Our goal is to make life easier for you by trying to remove as much of the stress and worry as possible, from applying for insurance. We will work to help you get the best possible cover that you need to take care of your family’s future – our caring and compassionate team members are on hand to advise you every step of the way.

In a similar way to life insurance, having had Hodgkin Lymphoma in the past doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t be able to get critical illness cover  now. Our job is to understand your situation and try to find the best option for you.

In order to approach insurers, we will need to understand certain information about the grading/staging of the cancer, the treatment you received and when you last received it, as well as any lasting complications that you have as a result.

If your Hodgkin Lymphoma was of a low staging then more favourable terms may apply, especially in a situation where it happened a while ago.

In other cases of a more recent or recurring diagnosis, or of high staging lymphomas, we may need to approach specialist insurers. This could result in the premiums being higher as well as a cancer exclusion being applied to some policies. It is also possible that with high grading/staging cancer, critical illness cover may not be available on the standard market.

In most cases, potential insurers will request to see a report from your doctor to confirm all of the details that have been provided. The report will provide the necessary information around the grading/staging of the cancer, details of any past treatments and the time since your last treatment.

But don’t worry, we sort everything out for you and keep you informed every step of the way. The offer you get largely depends on your circumstances and making sure you approach the right insurers to meet your needs.

Income protection is essential for securing your finances should an illness or chronic condition make it difficult for you to work. The good news is that there are policies available to provide coverage if you have previously had Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Income protection is a similar story to life insurance and critical illness cover in that the insurer will need information about whether you’ve experienced the illness multiple times, or if it was a one-off. They will also need to understand the grading/staging of the cancer, the treatments you received and when you last received them, the time since your last diagnosis and whether you have had to take any time off work.

The good news is that if your cancer was of a low staging and enough time has passed since your last treatment, we should be able to find an insurer who will offer income protection to you, without any exclusions for cancer related claims.

For higher staging lymphomas, or in cases where your treatment ended more recently, we may need to look at policies with an increased premium or a cancer exclusion attached. We can work with you on this as we know the best insurers to approach for different situations.

If you find, however, that the terms for income protection don’t suit your needs, don’t worry, we can look into other options for you such as an Accident, Sickness and Unemployment policy. This could provide monthly income replacement for between 12-24 months and as the policies are not medically underwritten, you having had Hodgkin Lymphoma will have no bearing on the policy price or acceptance terms.

It is worthwhile noting, however, that whilst this is the case, any claim that you place will be medically assessed, and any claim relating to existing conditions will be excluded.

Are you planning a holiday? Or just some travel abroad? Either way, it’s important that you have the right travel insurance for you.

What is Hodgkin Lymphoma?

Hodgkins lymphoma is a type of cancer that develops within the immune system, specifically the lymphatic system. This type of cancer can develop at any age, but is most common in people that are in their early 20s or over the age of 70.

Hodgkins lymphoma causing a certain lymphocyte within the immune system to multiple and collect within lymph glands. This is typically in the neck, groin or armpit. These lymphocytes start to lose their infection fighting abilities, which can lower a person’s immune response.

Common Questions

Hi, there are a number of options that we can look at for you. I’m sorry to hear that you have had difficulty in getting the insurances so far, it can be a bit of a minefield figuring out which insurers are the best for your circumstances, but that is what we are here for. We would need to have a chat about your health, more specific details of your diagnosis, treatment and recovery, for me to be able to advise you more. I would like to assure you though that as well as standard insurers, we have access to a number of specialist routes, that have been helpful to people in similar situations to you before.

I’m sorry to hear of your diagnosis and although I know it doesn’t help, I do hope that you are doing ok during this time. With many standard life insurance options you are right, the insurers will decline your application. There are some specialised routes that we can look at for you, but it is important to be aware that they may come with more restrictive contracts than the policies you will see with your typical big brand insurers.
