Hirschsprung’s Disease & Life InsuranceWe understand that having Hirschsprung’s disease is something, that you will have lived with your whole life. You will know far more about your health and condition, than many people within the insurance world.

We are here to listen to your story. We want to understand how Hirschsprung’s disease affects you, not some textbook definition of what the condition is.

There are some things that we will need to know, so that we can best help you:

  • How old were you when your Hirschsprung’s disease was diagnosed?
  • What kind of surgery did you have?
  • When did you have surgery?
  • Have you been left with any complications from the surgery?
  • What symptoms if any, do you currently have?

Depending upon the insurer that is approach, there may be some questions that will ask about things like incontinence. Please be assured that our advisers will speak to you about this in a sensitive way.

Life insurance for people that were born  Hirschsprung’s disease may be available at normal terms. This is most likely if you are fully recovered from the condition, with no lasting symptoms.

It is likely that many standard insurers will ask for your permission to see a report from your GP. This is so that they can get a clear picture of your current health, exact timeframes since surgery, any medications that use or ongoing symptoms.

If you do experience any ongoing symptoms, or restrictions on your ability to work, some insurers may offer life insurance at non-standard terms. This is usually some type of a premium increase.

This probably doesn’t sound great, but premium increases are not automatically huge and unaffordable. We are more than happy to help you through the application process and there is no obligation for you to take out the life insurance, if you don’t like the price.

If you have quite strong symptoms, or the Hirschsprung’s disease does affect your ability to work or do everyday activities, some insurers may decline your life insurance application.

This is when our services really stand out. We have access to both standard and specialist insurers. We will do thorough research before we talk to you about which insurer will suit you best.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Critical illness cover for people born with Hirschsprung’s disease may also be available at normal terms. You are most likely to see standard premiums for critical illness cover, if you have fully recovered from surgery with no lasting complications.

Most insurance providers will ask your permission to see a report from your GP, confirming your diagnosis, treatment and ongoing health. This is only done with your expressed permission.

When this happens, it can become a bit of backwards and forwards with your GP. Sometimes insurers may ask for a bit more information if the first report, doesn’t detail everything that they need to know. We monitor and chase this report with both the insurer and your GP, and keep you up to date every step of the way.

If you do continue to have symptoms, it is possible that insurers will increase the premiums on any terms that you are offered. The amount will depend upon how many and how strong your symptoms are.

Unfortunately, there is no guide on how much the cover could cost. No one is the same and your specific circumstances will need to be individually reviewed.

It is possible that some insurance providers will decline your application for critical illness cover, if you have particularly strong symptoms. Please do not let that put you off asking what is available as we have specialist options that could suit you.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Income protection applications for people that have had Hirschsprung’s disease will often need to detail the time since you had surgery, medications that are in use and your current health. The insurer will be interested in knowing if the condition has caused you to have any time off work.

Where the Hirschsprung’s disease no longer presents any symptoms and does not impact upon your lifestyle, it is possible that normal terms may be available.

For people that continue to have long lasting complications from the condition, the insurance provider may choose to increase the policy premium, postpone or decline the application for income protection.

If you find that the terms for income protection do not suit what you want, it may be worthwhile considering Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover.

Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover offers short-term income protection placement over a period of between 12 and 24 months if you are unable to work due to disability, long term illness or involuntary redundancy.

The policy is not medically underwritten which means that your medical history will have no impact upon the acceptance terms of cover. However you must be fully aware that any claim that you place on the policy will exclude pre-existing conditions.

Common Questions

Hi, I’m sorry that you are experiencing difficulties. I need to know a bit more about your health to fully advise you.

I know it doesn’t specifically help, but some insurers are better with specific medical conditions than others. And then that may change completely again if you have another medical condition e.g. high BMI.

Many people that come to us have been declined by insurers. There are times that we have then been able to arrange them life insurance at standard terms elsewhere. It’s all about knowing where to look.

Please let me know a good time to contact you and we can start helping you to get the insurance that you need.
