Haemophilia & Life Insurance
When you have haemophilia you may wonder whether or not you can get life insurance. And if you can, will it be at silly prices due to your health.
We understand that figuring out the best insurer to support you and your health, is not always the easiest thing to do. That is why we are here.
Our team of expert advisers will speak with you to and talk through your medical information, so that we can put your life insurance application with the right insurer.
Things we need to know to support you:
- What type of haemophilia do you have?
- When were you diagnosed with haemophilia?
- What medication do you take?
- What treatments do you need?
- Have you been treated as an inpatient due to the haemophilia.
- Are you able to work?
People living with haemophilia may be able to get life insurance at normal terms, depending upon the strength and regularity of their symptoms. If this is available, it means that you will be offered life insurance at the basic premium.
You may find that some insurers will ask to see a report from your GP to confirm your diagnosis. This is only done with your explicit permission.
This report will confirm to the insurer the type of haemophilia that you have, detail any preventative medications that you use and any events that have required reactive/on-demand treatment.
Haemophiliacs with stronger, frequent and recent symptoms may find that life insurance is offered at non-standard terms. This will mean an increase to the policy premium.
It is possible that if you have had recent flare-ups, or if your haemophilia affects you quite a lot, that life insurance may be postponed until your health stabilises. It may be the case that some insurers decline the life insurance.
This is when our services truly standout. We understand the life insurance market in and out, this is what we do all day, every day. Our advisers are here to support you, whenever you are ready to have a chat.
Haemophilia & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover for people living with haemophilia may be available with some insurers. It is most likely that the policy will be offered at non-standard terms.
It is most likely that this will in the form a premium increase. Some insurers may instead offer you the critical illness cover with an exclusion for claims relating to the haemophilia.
Your application will probably need to be supported with a report from your GP. This is obtained by the insurer at their expense, only if you give them permission to see it.
If your symptoms are quite strong and you have had recent flare-ups, then you may find that critical illness cover needs to be placed with a specialist insurer.
When you speak with us, you will have a dedicated adviser that will support you through the entire insurance journey. They will research the market for you, clearly talk you through all of the options and take the hassle out of the application process for you.
Haemophilia & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for people living with haemophilia may be available. We will need to be approach specific insurers that can consider your application.
If you are offered income protection, it will most likely be at non-standard terms. This is probably going to be an increase to the policy premiums.
When it comes to income protection, insurers are quite keen to know if you have been unable to work in the last few years due to your health. For many applications you will be asked if you have needed to take time out of work due the haemophilia.
Income protection can sometimes come with exclusions relating to existing health conditions. It’s really important to check and see if this is what you are offered. Some people are not overly thrilled with exclusions but are still happy to take out the policy, as they do not think that their existing health will stop them working.
It is completely up to you to decide what you do and don’t feel comfortable with, when it comes to your insurances. Our job is to provide you with the options that you have, it is then your choice over what you do.
If you find that the income protection on offer does not suit you, it is possible to consider Accident, Sickness and Unemployment Cover.
An accident, sickness and unemployment policy will provide 12 to 24 months of short-term income protection in the event that you are unable to work due to disability, long-term illness or are made involuntarily redundant.
This policy type is not medically underwritten at the application stage. This means that your diagnosis of haemophilia will have no impact upon the policy premium or acceptance terms.
But the policies are medically underwritten at the point of a claim and will exclude any claims relating to pre-existing conditions.

Common Questions
Hi, that is a bit of tricky one to answer. There is no one insurer that is good for any particular health condition. They are all good in different ways.
Some insurers are better for older people, non-smokers, people with a high BMI, previously had cancer, etc. The list can go on and on. There are a lot of combinations of factors that we need to discuss to find the right insurer for you.
It is really important to do research to find the best insurer for your specific diagnosis and symptoms. This doesn’t always mean the cheapest insurer. Some insurers now offer things like on-demand remote GP services and other enhanced support, that can be really good for you and your family.
You may find that the cheapest insurer offers these services, if they do fantastic. But, it may be that an insurer that is a bit more expensive, offers you extras that are worth considering. The main thing is to see all of the options in front of you, before you make a decision.
