Gilbert's Syndrome & Life Insurance
Living with Gilbert’s Syndrome can be something that people are very mindful of due to the symptoms that they experience. For others, they might have no idea that they have the condition as they experience no symptoms at all.
When it comes to life insurance your options for cover will depend upon the symptoms that you experience and how much Gilbert’s Syndrome affects your overall health.
To get things started we will ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with Gilbert’s Syndrome?
- What medication or treatments have you had for Gilbert’s Syndrome?
- Have you experienced jaundice?
- When was the last time that you experienced jaundice?
You might be able to get life insurance at standard terms if you have not any symptoms linked to Gilbert’s Syndrome for a while. The insurers will mainly be interested in whether you have recently had jaundice, how often you experience jaundice and if you have completed any treatment for this.
If you have experienced jaundice recently, or do experience it often, you could find that the insurer will want to see a report from your GP to confirm your health. They are interested in knowing if your liver function is affected at all by the Gilbert’s Syndrome. After this they might decide to offer you life insurance at non-standard terms, which is an increase to the premiums.
If your Gilbert’s Syndrome was a random find due to investigations for another health condition, then the insurers will want to know more about this additional condition that you have. Gilbert’s Syndrome can be linked to type 1 diabetes and we have a dedicated page for this that you can access here. We also have a lot of other health conditions on our website that you can access too in our health conditions list.

Gilbert's Syndrome & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
You can find that critical illness cover is offered at standard terms or at an increased premium due to your Gilbert’s Syndrome. As Gilbert’s Syndrome can affect the liver, there is potentially an increased chance of you claiming on a critical illness policy, which is why insurers might decide to offer you the policy at a higher premium.
If you have had jaundice recently or had it multiple times in the last couple of years, you may find that some insurers postpone your application until there has been some time since the jaundice has happened.

Gilbert's Syndrome & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
You might be able to get income protection at normal premiums with some insurers. This will depend upon how much the Gilbert’s Syndrome affects you on a day to day basis and at work.
If you have had any time off work due to Gilbert’s Syndrome or another health condition, this can affect your options for income protection. You can find that insurers place exclusions for clams linked to pre-existing conditions.
