Diabetes Inspidus & Life Insurance
Diabetes insipidus is a condition that can cause people to be excessively thirsty and have a need to urinate more frequently.
There have been some people living with the condition where the symptoms have been so strong, that they have passed up to 20 litres of urine a day.
To be able to help you in finding the right insurance for you we will need to know the following things:
- What type of diabetes insipidus do you have?
- When were you diagnosed this?
- What medications do you take?
- How often do you have symptoms?
- Are your symptoms well controlled?
Life Insurance for people with diabetes insipidus may be available at standard terms. The insurer you approach will want to see a report from your GP, at their own expense, to confirm your medical history and overall health. This is only done with your explicit permission.
It is possible that your life insurance application may be accepted at standard terms, if your symptoms are quite mild.
For people that are experiencing stronger symptoms it is more likely that you will be offered life insurance at non-standard terms (premium increase). This doesn’t necessarily mean silly prices.
If the symptoms of diabetes insipidus are very strong, possibly affecting your ability to work, then your application could be postponed for a set period of time until treatment and/or your symptoms stabilise.
Depending upon the insurer that you approach you may find that your application for life insurance is declined. This is why we are her. We can do the research for you to give you the life insurance options, without you being faced with hearing that decline.
Diabetes Insipidus & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover for people living with diabetes insipidus may be available at non-standard terms, depending upon the insurer that you place your application. Not every insurer will offer cover, so detailed research is key to getting you the insurance.
Tthe insurer will ask permission to see a report from your GP, confirming the specific details of the diabetes that you have and if there is any known cause for its onset
They will also confirm your medications that are currently in use, any future checks or treatment that you are due and how your overall health is.
Depending upon who you place your critical illness cover with you may be able to access cover at non-standard terms (premium increase).
There is the potential that your application for critical illness cover will be declined with some insurers. For any form of diabetes, it can be tricky to arrange critical illness cover.
We have a number of options to look at for you on both the standard and specialist insurance market. It is really important to carefully read the terms and conditions for any policy that you are looking at, to check any exclusions that could be on the policy, due to your diabetes.
Diabetes Insipidus & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for people with diabetes insipidus may be available at non-standard terms with some insurers.
The insurance provider will use a report from your GP alongside your insurance application, to see if they can offer you terms of cover. The insurer will be particularly interested in any extended periods of time you have had off work due to your diabetes.
Where income protection is available it will be at rated terms which will involve a premium increase. This is not necessarily silly increases in the cover, but it is important to be prepared that you are unlikely to get income protection at the premiums that you see from online searches.
There are some insurers that will automatically decline your application for income protection, but you may be able to challenge this on a case by case basis.
There are a number of options that can be looked at for you, when it comes to income protection. It is one of the most flexible insurance policies that can be tailored to your specific needs. If you have been told no in the past, please do not let that put you off asking for advice.

If you are unable to secure income protection insurance or are unhappy with the terms of cover received, it may be worth considering Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover.
An accident, sickness and unemployment policy will provide your with short-term income replacement if you are unable to work due to disability, long-term injury or involuntary unemployment.
These policies are not medically underwritten at the time of application meaning that the cover you are given will be accepted at standard terms. However any claim that you place will be subject to medical underwriting and exclude any claims relating to existing conditions.
