Coronary Angioplasty & Life Insurance
We understand that having a coronary angioplasty can be quite a daunting experience. We have made it our mission to help people who have medical conditions to secure insurance and take the hassle and jargon away.
Applying for insurance after having a coronary angioplasty can be difficult, and it’s our job to make sure that we make the application process as simple and easy for you as possible.
When considering your application for life insurance, there will be a couple of specific questions about your condition. You’ll need to provide information about:
- Which arteries are affected?
- What is the underlying condition that triggered the need for an angioplasty?
- How your health is following the operation?
The insurer will probably want to see a report from your GP, to confirm the above and to get a picture of your overall health. This is only done with your explicit permission.
Depending upon the extent of your treatment, the number of arteries affected and the presence of any underlying conditions you may be offered life insurance, but this will most likely be at an increased premium.
It is our job to make sure that you get the best life insurance for your needs, taking into account not only the price of the policy, but also the value added benefits too. We will talk through all the options available to you and we never go ahead with anything until you are completely certain that you are happy with the cover.
Coronary Angioplasty & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
It is highly unlikely that you will be able to find personal critical illness cover on the standard market, if you have had a coronary angioplasty. This is because heart attacks are one of the highest reasons that critical illness claims are paid.
With you already having a heart condition, the insurer will be more cautious about the risk that you may have further heart related events.
Please do not let this put you off, as there are specialist policies that we can access for you. Eligibility criteria for these policies is quite strict and we recommend that you speak with one of our insurance advisers who can guide you further.
Coronary Angioplasty & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
It’s unlikely that you will find personal income protection insurance on the standard market if you have had a coronary angioplasty. This is because insurers believe that your condition puts you at an increased risk of needing time off work due to your health.
If you have your own Limited company, or an employer who is willing to consider arranging income protection for its employees, this could be a good way for you to access long-term income protection insurance. Our advisers are trained to arrange these policies, known as Group Income Protection, for you.

One potential alternative to consider if your coronary angioplasty prevents you from getting income protection, is Accident, Sickness and Unemployment Cover. This type of policy generally provides 1 to 2 years of income replacement if disability, serious injury or involuntary redundancy prevents you from working.
This sort of policy is not medically underwritten, making it much more accessible for people with a coronary angioplasty. However, you need to be aware that any claim you make on the policy will exclude anything relating to existing health conditions.
Coronary Angioplasty & Travel Insurance
Coronary angioplasty can also complicate a travel insurance application. And there’s nothing quite like a complex insurance application to put the dampeners on your holiday spirit, is there?
Speak to a specialist who has experience in helping people with your condition to get the right cover. Find out more by visiting our travel page here.
What is Coronary Angioplasty?
An angioplasty is an operation performed under local anaesthetic where a small balloon is inflated within the artery walls to improve the increase of blood flow through the area. The operation is often combined with the insertion of a stent that remains in place to maintain a more constant blood flow.
A coronary angioplasty is performed when the artery walls have become hardened and narrowed and standard medication is not effectively improving the flow of blood through the arteries.

Common Questions
Generally speaking, any previous coronary angioplasty surgery is likely to mean you have significant difficulty in securing long-term income protection cover. One alternative is Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover, which offers short term income replacement in a non-medically underwritten policy. This is an easier policy to obtain but any claim related in any way to your existing conditions will not be covered.
Yes we can. There are a number of options that we can look at for you. It can be really disheartening to be declined life insurance, the important thing is to not give up hope. It may be that we need to speak with a specialist insurer, it may simply be that your original application was with an insurer that’s not fab for those with a history of heart complications. Do not worry though, give us a call and we can start getting things sorted for you.

“Offered sound advice and made the whole process very easy and presented the best options to me. Could have had more policy details in the options (as oppose basic term and costs) but overall was good” - 5
