Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia & Life Insurance
When you have been told that you have cancer it is not always easy to know what types of insurance you can have. We are here to make things as easy as possible for you.
You might hear people say that if you have cancer you cannot get life insurance. Chronic myeloid leukaemia is sometimes seen differently to other cancers and there are times that life insurance can be available.
To get things started we will ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia?
- Are you currently in the chronic phase, accelerated phase or blast phase of CML?
- What treatments for Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia have you had?
When you have Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia your ability to get life insurance on the standard market will depend upon your age, what phase of the CML you are experiencing, and your treatment. It’s quite likely that the insurer will offer you what is known as non-standard terms for life insurance. This means that they will increase your life insurance premiums due to you currently living with cancer. Life insurance is usually very cheap so these increases often aren’t as big as people think they will be.
You can find that many insurers will not able to offer you life insurance if you were diagnosed with CML under the age of 50 and will unfortunately decline your application for life insurance. We have access to specialist insurers that can potentially consider your application for life insurance.
Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.
Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Unfortunately at the moment the options for you critical illness cover when you have Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia are very limited, they will exclude any claims relating to the cancer.
It can be a good idea to talk with your employer about critical illness cover through their own insurances, as this will usually give you the highest quality cover that you can get whilst living with cancer.
Our award winning advisers are here to make sure that you get the right insurer to match you and your health.
Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
You may find that income protection is available to you if you have not provided that you have not had any chemotherapy or radiotherapy in the last few years. With income protection you ideally want to find an option that can pay you your income right up to retirement if you become ill and can never work again. It is quite likely that if an insurer can offer you income protection that claims have a maximum payout time of 2-5 years, per claimable event.
If this is not an option for you it’s worth speaking with your employer and seeing if they have a group income protection scheme. This is an income protection policy that is set up for the employees of a business. You will typically find that this kind of insurance policy will offer you the strongest level of income protection that you can get.
Our advisers are here to make sure that you get the best insurance policy to protect your income.

Common Questions
Hi, unfortunately this is a kind of yes and no answer. With standard life insurance policies in the UK you will find that insurers want you to have finished chemotherapy, before they offer you life insurance. That doesn’t mean you can’t get life insurance, but you need to be aware of the limits of the cover you can currently have.
You can get life insurance policy whilst you are undergoing chemotherapy, but these policies will not pay out for any claims relating to your cancer or the treatment. You might want to take out this kind of policy as a temporary solution, but the ability to claim on the policy is limited.
