Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia & Life Insurance
Finding the right insurance after a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to simplify the process for you.
It’s common to hear that having cancer makes it impossible to get life insurance until you have fully recovered from it. However, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) is sometimes viewed differently than other cancers and there are times when life insurance can still be an option.
To begin, we’ll need to know:
- When were you diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia?
- Are you currently in the chronic, accelerated, or blast phase of CLL?
- What treatments have you received for CLL?
When living with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, your ability to get life insurance on the standard market depends on your age, the phase of your CLL, the treatments you’ve had and your overall health now. Insurers may offer what’s called “non-standard terms,” which typically means higher premiums due to your current health condition. However, life insurance is generally affordable, so these increases may not be as high as you think.
If you were diagnosed with CLL under the age of 50, some insurers may decline your application. Fortunately, we work with specialist insurers who may still consider you for life insurance.
Our expert advisers are here to ensure your policy is matched with the best possible insurer for your needs.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Currently, critical illness cover options for individuals with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) are quite limited, and if you are able to arrange it there will be exclusions for any claim relating to the cancer. Unfortunately it is very likely that you will be declined critical illness cover if you apply for it.
It may be helpful to discuss critical illness cover with your employer, as workplace insurance often provides the best cover available for people living with cancer. It will likely have exclusions relating to the cancer, but you should still be covered for other circumstances.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection may be available to you if you have not undergone chemotherapy or radiotherapy for CLL in the past few years.
Ideally, you’ll want a policy that can cover your income until retirement if you’re ill and can’t work. You can find that some insurers that can offer you income protection may limit the payout period to 2-5 years per claimable event. You will likely find that the insurance will not cover claims relating to your cancer.
If this isn’t an option, it’s worth checking with your employer to see if they offer a group income protection scheme. These policies, designed for employees of a company, often provide the highest level of income protection and might not have exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
