Cervical Spondylosis & Life InsuranceWe understand that cervical spondylosis can just be one of those things that happens as we start to get older. It can also happen if we need to do specific repetitive tasks, at any point in our life.

Applying for life insurance when you have cervical spondylosis can seem a little daunting. But in reality, life insurance for people with the condition can be available at normal terms with some insurers. This can happen if your health is stable and you do not require strong medication to manage the symptoms.

We’ll be able to advise you on your application based upon your specific circumstances. We will need some information from you including:

  • How long it has been since you were diagnosed?
  • Any medications that you use?
  • Any other treatment you receive?
  • Have you had any surgery?
  • How the condition affects your day to day living?
  • Any other medical conditions that you have?

If you do have any other medical conditions included on your application the insurer may want to discuss those other aspects of your health further.

We’ve helped lots of people with cervical spondylitis to secure the most appropriate life insurance policy for their needs., so please do get in touch and speak to one of our experts. Let us take the hassle out of the application process for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

As with life insurance, critical illness cover for people that have cervical spondylosis may be available on standard terms. This is most likely if your condition is well controlled and does not present significant problems to your general standard of living and day to day health.

With any critical illness insurance application, the acceptance criteria can sometimes be a little more strict than with life insurance. It is possible that the insurer may want to see a a medical report from your GP. This is simply to confirm the information that you have given them and for them to see the technical medication that your GP will have noted about your diagnosis.

Standard terms may be available for critical illness cover, but it all comes down to how much the condition is affecting your daily living, ability to work and how you manage your health. If your symptoms are seen to have a significant impact upon your life, or your medication and treatment are quite strong, you may be offered cover at non-standard terms.

Get in touch and let us talk you through the potential options available to you.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Income protection policies are brilliant because you can pick and choose so many aspects of them, effectively building them to suit your needs.

Obtaining income protection when you have cervical spondylosis is more complicated than it is for people without any medical disclosures. We are here to take away the complicated parts of it for you, so you can focus on the main parts of what the costs, what you are covered for and when the policy can start.

As a standard part of any application, the insurer will be interested in information about your health and any medications or treatments that you use. But in addition, with income protection, you’ll need to provide information about any amount of time you’ve had off work relating to your cervical spondylosis.

With income protection policies it is quite common for pre-existing medical conditions to be excluded from potential claims.

If long-term income protection is not available to you, there are a couple of different options that we can look at. One of these is Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover. This type of policy can replace your income for between 12 and 24 months.

The positive part of it is that you can access these policies without medical underwriting, so the cervical spondylitis will not affect you being able to get the cover.

It is really important to be fully aware that these policies are known as non-medically underwritten at the point of setting them up. But, they are medically underwritten at the point that you make a claim. This means that most of these policies will exclude claims relating to your cervical spondylitis.

If you’re going to be travelling overseas in the near future, you’ll need to declare your cervical spondylosis on any travel insurance application. You can visit our travel page to find out more here.

What is Cervical Spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is an age-related condition where parts of the spine begin to alter, become rigid and painful due to ‘wear and tear’. As we age the spine may begin to develop bones spurs (osteophytes) to compensate for the loss of cushioning provided by degenerated discs. These extra lumps of bone can cause the spine to become rigid resulting in reduced movement and excess pressure upon the spinal cord and surrounding nerves.

Also: Cervical Osteoarthritis

Linked with: Chronic neck pain, cervical radiculopathy (brachialgia), cervical myelopathy (spinal damage), high BMIarthritis

Some people with Cervical Spondylosis may experience some or all of the following symptoms and problems:

  • Difficulty walking
  • Headaches
  • In severe cases the condition may cause incontinence
  • Loss of coordination
  • Loss of feeling in the hands and feet
  • Pins and needles in the arms and legs
  • Shoulder pain
  • Stiff neck
  • Use of support pillows when laying down
  • Aspirin
  • Codeine
  • Diazepam
  • Exercise
  • Ibupofen (Brufen, Cuprofen)
  • Naproxen
  • Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Paracetamol
  • Physiotherapy

Common Questions

If you have a well managed condition that hasn’t caused you any time off work in the past, then its possible that you might be able to set up an income protection policy. Some insurers may refuse or decline your application for income protection, but please do not let this concern you. There are many options when it comes to income protection, personal policies, group (employer-funded) income protection and non-medically underwritten options. We can access all of these for you.
