Cerebral Palsy & Life Insurance
We understand that having cerebral palsy can make some things in life a bit trickier, but it doesn’t mean that you stop living life to the fullest that you can.
Finding life insurance when you have cerebral palsy can be quite difficult. But everyone is individual, symptoms of the condition vary greatly, how you have adapted your life around the condition will be unique to you.
Availability of life insurance is highly dependent upon how the cerebral palsy affects things like your day to day living, ability to work and how your overall health is.
We’ve helped lots of people with cerebral palsy to apply for life insurance. Generally speaking, when you apply, the insurer will need quite a bit of information. This will include things like:
- Information about your motor skills
- Whether you have any neurological impairments
- Any history of blackouts/seizure
- Whether you need a carer
- Whether you are working
The insurer will also want to see a report from your GP to confirm your diagnosis and symptoms, so that they can get a good picture of your overall health.
Depending upon how the condition affects you, you could be offered life insurance at either standard or non-standard (higher premium) terms.
We understand that your primary goal is financial peace of mind for your family and we’ll go to great measures to help you achieve that. We will find you a suitable life insurance policy that takes your cerebral palsy into account.
Cerebral Palsy & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
We’ll go the extra mile to simplify the process of applying for critical illness cover for you, with you having cerebral palsy.
Some of the information that the insurer will ask for, will be similar to that of life insurance. Things like whether or not you work, if you require a carer and how the condition affects your mobility (amongst other things). And again, it’s common for the provider to obtain a GP report.
You may be offered critical illness cover at non-standard terms. This could be an increased premium or with exclusions. This would mean that claimable conditions that are caused by the cerebral palsy, wouldn’t be covered by the policy.
The terms that you are offered really depend upon your symptoms and day to day health. To be considered for most critical illness policies your cerebral palsy will have to be mild with no major complications. If that isn’t you please do not worry, there are specialist insurers that we can approach.
We’ll explain the whole process and the various options available to you simply (free from insurance jargon!).
Cerebral Palsy & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
It can be tricky to obtain income protection if you have cerebral palsy. The terms of the policies available to you, will really come down to how much the condition affects your ability to work and do what are considered to be normal day to day activities. The acceptance for income protection cover can be quite strict.
If you work and your employer is prepared to establish a company funded Income Protection plan, cover might be more readily available. This is known as Group Income Protection that is set up through your employer, or your own company. Please feel free to contact us if you want to know more about how this works.

Should you find income protection isn’t readily available for you, an alternative to consider might be Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover. This is a type of short term income protection that pays for between 12 and 24 months.
The main benefit for those with complex conditions like cerebral palsy is that the policies are not medically underwritten. However, you won’t be covered for any claim relating to Cerebral Palsy.
Cerebral Palsy & Travel Insurance
Those with cerebral palsy also need to take this into account in their travel insurance. Find out more about applying for an appropriate policy by visiting our travel page here.
