Brain Tumour & Life Insurance
Being diagnosed with a brain tumour is a shock. Most people worry about their health, finances and what everything will mean for their family.
Life insurance is often something that people start to really think about following their diagnosis. There can be options for life insurance when you have had a brain tumour, but they can massively depending upon your specific diagnosis and the insurers that you speak to.
When you speak with us to get things started we will ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with a brain tumour?
- What type of brain tumour did you have?
- What was the size of the brain tumour?
- Where in the brain is the tumour located?
- Are there plans to remove the brain tumour?
The best options for you for life insurance will be if your brain tumour has been removed. Insurers know that this isn’t always possible so they will often try and consider life insurance applications if you have had a number of MRIs that show the tumour has not changed over time.
If your brain tumour is still present it’s quite likely that the insurer will increase the premiums for your life insurance.
There is also the possibility that some insurers will postpone or decline your life insurance application, depending upon the grading of the tumour and where it is located. We have access to specialist insurers that can offer life insurance to people in most situations.
Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.
Brain Tumour & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover can sometimes be available for people that have had a benign brain tumour, that has been removed or has not grown or changed for a number of years. It is quite likely that if you are able to arrange critical illness cover that there will be a brain cancer exclusion on the policy. Depending upon the location of the tumour you might find that there is also a blindness and/or deafness exclusion.
Some insurers will place a full cancer exclusion on your critical illness policy, so it’s essential to research the market and try to find an insurer that will do as small an exclusion as possible.

Brain Tumour & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for people with brain tumours is often reviewed on a case by case basis, with insurers finding it difficult to give an indication of the terms they can offer before they see a report from your GP.
You will find that most income protection policies will exclude claims relating to the brain tumour.

What is a Brain Tumour?
Brain tumours can affect anyone including children, but are more common in older people. There are no particular reasons why someone can develop a brain tumour, but sometimes exposure to radiotherapy in the head area or some genetic conditions can cause them. They are graded between 1 and 4, with 1 being the least aggressive and 4 being the most harmful and cancerous. Grades 1 and 2 are referred to as benign, and grades 3 and 4 high grade malignant.
