Asthma & Life Insurance
We understand that for the majority of people who have asthma, the condition has very little adverse affect upon their lifestyle. It is often very easily controlled by simply using inhalers.
This means that for the majority of cases, asthma is not seen as a particularly serious condition by many insurers. The times that insurers start to look more closely at your application is if you have been hospitalised at any point due to the asthma, required oral steroids or if it affects your ability to work.
What that means is that for many people with asthma, standard terms for life insurance are often available.
What the insurer will want to know are things like:
- How many attacks you have had over a certain period?
- Whether you have been admitted to hospital for asthma related complications?
- What medication you use?
- Whether you smoke or have any other lifestyle habits that may worsen your condition?
If you have particularly severe asthma and have been admitted to hospital as a result or have frequent attacks and require oral steroids, then you may not be offered non-standard terms for cover. In this case, policies with special terms usually in the form of an increased premium, will likely be an option available to you.
We’ve made it our job to help those with asthma to get the most appropriate and competitive life insurance available.
Asthma & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover could well be available to you on standard terms, if your asthma is mild to moderate, well controlled with inhalers and has not resulted in hospital admissions.
As well as this the insurer will also want to know whether you’ve ever had to have time off as the result of your asthma, or any conditions relating to it. If you have, please do not worry. There are a lot of insurers to look at and it’s important to research which one is right for you, this is where our services stand out.
If your condition is more severe and, for example, you suffer many asthma attacks that need controlling with oral steroids or you have had to be admitted to hospital, then the insurers might offer policies with increased premiums.
Asthma & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health
When people living with asthma apply for income protection, the application process will be similar to the insurances above. You can expect to be asked about the severity of your condition, what medication you need, the frequency of your asthma attacks, ant time off work you have had and any hospital admissions.
We’re keen to stress that asthma is not regarded as a serious condition by most insurers. But, when it comes to income protection policies it is very common for even the simplest medical condition to result in an exclusion or premium increase. This is why it may be the case that even if your asthma is mild with easily controlled symptoms, you may be offered cover at an increased premium.
You may wish instead to consider accident, sickness and unemployment cover that will provide you with short-term income protection of between 12 and 24 months. The policy is not medically underwritten so your asthma will not impact upon the policy premiums or your eligibility for the policy.
However, you must be certain that you fully understand that any claim made on the policy will be subject to medical evidence and any asthma related conditions will be excluded from your claims potential.
Asthma & Travel Insurance
What is Asthma?
Asthma is caused by the inflammation of the bronchi within the lungs, causing a feeling of tightness and breathlessness in an individual. An asthma attack can be triggered by a number of factors including environmental allergens, overexertion and as a reaction to medication, to name but a few.
There are a number of reasons that an individual can develop asthma which include a low birth weight, exposure to smoke, other atopic conditions and a familial predisposition to the condition. Many asthmatics effectively control the condition through the use of preventative inhalers (daily use) and reliever inhalers (reactive to an attack).
Also: Exercise-induced asthma, Cough-induced asthma, Occupational asthma

Common Questions
It all comes down to the questions that the insurer asks. If they ask if you have ever had asthma then yes, you certainly need to inform them. The fact that your condition is well controlled and you’ve been free of attacks for so long will stand your application in good stead and increase your chances of a policy on standard terms.
A more recent attack resulting in hospital admission is likely to mean your condition is regarded as more severe. It doesn’t rule out life insurance but could mean you are offered a policy with higher premiums. Depending on how your health is now, any treatment plans that you have or outstanding investigations, you may find that your application is declined with some insurers for now. Do not worry though, we specialise in knowing which insurers are going to be right for you, and can get you the cover that you need.
