Angioedema & Life Insurance
We know that in most cases angioedema is a condition that can be quite easily controlled, often at home by either using antihistamines, steroids or a change of medication.
Even so, getting life insurance can be made more difficult due to the condition, so we help those with angioedema to find the right cover.
For all of our customers with angioedema, we find the most suitable life insurance policy for you, offering financial peace of mind. And just as importantly, we take the hassle out of it for you.
To find the most appropriate policy for you, we’ll need to know a number of things, including:
- When were you first diagnosed with angioedema?
- What are your symptoms?
- The cause of your condition?
- Do you have any secondary conditions?
- How’s your general day to day health?
- How often is the condition triggered?
For many people who are fully aware of the condition, who know how to avoid the things that act as a trigger, you may be able to get standard terms life insurance.
In other cases, you may be offered non-standard terms (higher pricing). We know that this will not sound ideal, but the increases aren’t necessarily huge, so it is worth looking at. It’s fairly common for insurers to request a medical report from your GP ahead of arranging any sort of cover. This is not unusual at all and the insurer should cover the cost of that.
Angioedema & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
As with life insurance, critical illness cover applications will also ask for information about your day to day health, the cause of your condition, triggers and any secondary conditions that you have.
With the critical illness insurance application, It’s really quite common for an insurer to request a GP report to get a full picture of your overall health. Many insurers generally offer cover and we suggest looking at several applications to find the right terms for you.
We take as much of the hassle out of the application process as possible for you, leaving you to get on with living your life!
Angioedema & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection applications will need to detail the frequency you experience symptoms and the medication you use. The insurer will want to know how much time, if any, you’ve taken off work as the result of the condition.
It’s important when you look at income protection that you try to arrange a policy on an ‘own occupation’ definition. This means that if you are unable to do your specific job, the insurer can consider a claim. Other definitions are broader, which can mean that making a claim becomes a bit trickier.
If you do find that the terms for income protection simply don’t suit you, then accident, sickness and unemployment cover might be more suitable. This sort of policy will provide you with a monthly income replacement of 12 to 24 months if you find yourself unable to work due to long term injury, disability or voluntary redundancy.
Unlike income protection cover applications, there’s no medical underwriting required. In other words, the fact that you have angioedema won’t have any bearing on the terms you are offered. That does make the application process simpler, but you should also be aware than that you won’t be able to make a claim relating to pre-existing medical conditions on the policy.

Common Questions
If you suffer particularly severely with angioedema, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be offered life insurance on standard terms. However, by directing your application through specialist providers, we can often still secure life insurance for you albeit with special terms (often equating to higher premiums).
Please do not be concerned if you have been declined life insurance elsewhere, we have people come to us everyday saying that they have been refused cover by an insurer. This is where we step in and use our specialist knowledge to find you the insurance that you need.
If you have well controlled angioedema that rarely flares up and you’ve had years without an incident, then this will certainly stand you in better stead when applying for income protection. You will still need to answer a lot of questions about your condition and its severity, along with questions about any time of work you’ve had in the past.
However, a condition like yours that hasn’t flared up in years should mean you can get some suitable income protection, it may include exclusions for angioedema related work absence, but we will do what we can to get you the best cover possible.
