Comparing Critical Illness Cover – S7 Ep2
In this episode Paul Roberts from CIExpert joined me to talk about the importance of comparing critical illness cover.
Critical illness cover is a policy that pays out if you are diagnosed with a critical illness that the insurer covers. This can often come with a specific definition such as ‘cancer of a specified severity).
There are some really key things to know:
- First time buyers- the best contract doesn’t necessarily have the highest amount of conditions on offer, it can do but it’s all about finding the right insurer for you. You need to look at the definitions of the claimable conditions, potentially the children’s cover and more to choose the right policy for you.
- Second time buyers – if you are replacing your original critical illness cover there is a lot to check! The conditions that you are covered for may have increased in number which is great, but double check that if some conditions are no longer available on new policies, if you’re ok with this. Has the amount of children’s cover reduced? There is this and much more that you need to check.

Updates to HIV Underwriting – S7 Inbetweenysode
We have seen a huge change in the last few years over how insurers view HIV when it comes to life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection.
Life insurance can now sometimes be available at standard terms with no increases to the policy premiums.
Critical illness cover is now potentially an option for individuals on the standard market. Before, people living with HIV were restricted to guaranteed acceptance polices with lots of exclusions, or group critical illness cover that is a fantastic product but is highly dependent upon your employment benefit package.
Income protection is now also a policy that can be applied for without exclusions relating to the HIV. I cannot describe just how much of a difference this is to what we used to see even just a couple of years. It’s a short listen of 20 minutes and I’m sure you will find it useful.
Remember, if you have listened to this as part of your work, you can claim a CPD certificate on the website, thanks to the podcasts sponsors Octo Members.
