When you have HIV the insurer is going to want to know some specific details about your condition so that they can fully assess your application.
Common questions that insurers will ask include:
- When were you diagnosed with HIV?
- Were you diagnosed in the UK?
- Did you contract HIV through drug use?
- What is your CD4 count?
- What is your viral load? Is it undetectable?
The insurer will want to speak to your GP and specialist about your condition, to confirm the details of your health. There are processes in place with most insurers, so that if your GP does not know about your HIV diagnosis, that they are only asked about your general health.
Life Insurance – limited options, you will need to apply to insurers that can consider your application, and generally find that the policy term is limited to a maximum of 25 years.
Critical Illness Cover – limited options, you will need to apply to specialist insurers and any claim related to your HIV will be excluded from the cover.
Income Protection – limited options, you will find that cover is restricted to short-term claim policies and will likely have HIV related illnesses excluded from the policy.
Private Medical Insurance – generally available, most policies will exclude any claims related to the HIV.
