Hi, everybody, and welcome to today’s Stop, Look, Listen. Today I want to focus

This is quite a different video to the ones I usually do, I’m wearing a mask.

There is a huge debate at the moment about whether or not people should be wearing masks. Something that I did not think of, until recently, is how difficult it will be for people that are hard of hearing to communicate whilst we wear masks.

I saw a video recently where a paramedic showed how he uses an app on his phone to do real-time transcribing. This allows people that are hard of hearing to be able to read what the person is saying to them.

I felt quite ashamed that I didn’t think to look for an app like this sooner. My mum is hard of hearing and has been anxious about going out again, not knowing if she can communicate with others whilst we all wear masks. I’m so pleased that this technology is available to help her and others that have difficulty hearing.

This may not be perfect for everybody that has difficulty with their hearing and the app I was using didn’t pick up every word correctly. Maybe my Yorkshire accent was confusing it!

My hope by doing this video and sharing it, is that just like seeing the paramedics video made me stop and think, others will have the same happen too.
