Addison's Disease & Life Insurance

We understand that people with Addison’s disease know how to properly monitor and control the condition. And yet, getting life insurance can be made more difficult due to your diagnosis.

Addison’s Disease & Life InsuranceWe search the insurance market to make sure that you get the most suitable life insurance policy. Our goal is to give you financial peace of mind and just as importantly, we take the hassle out of it for you.

To find the most appropriate policy for you, we’ll need to know a number of things, including:

  • Is your condition fully controlled with medication?
  • Do you have any secondary conditions?
  • How’s your general day to day health?
  • Have you have experienced adrenal crisis, and if so, when?

For many people where the condition is fully controlled and there are no secondary conditions, it may be possible to get standard terms life insurance. But depending upon the insurer and your symptoms, you may offered life insurance at non-standard terms (higher pricing).

If you have experienced adrenal crisis insurers will want information about this before offering cover. Even if you have recently had an adrenal crisis you can still obtain cover, we just may need to look at a specialist insurer for you.

If your health is generally good and your condition is fully controlled, with no history of adrenal crisis, then you’re more likely to be accepted for a standard terms policy. The insurer will probably want to see a report from your GP (at the expense of the insurer – not you!).

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

As with life insurance applications, critical illness cover applications will also ask for information about your day to day health, secondary conditions and episodes of adrenal crisis.

With any critical illness insurance application, it’s really quite common for an insurer to request a GP report to get a full picture of your overall health. The insurer may choose to offer critical illness cover at a higher premium, based upon your health, and it is our job to find you the best terms possible. Even if you have recently had an adrenal crisis you can still obtain cover, but you may need to look at a specialist policy.

We aim to take as much of the hassle out of the application process as possible for you, leaving you to get on with living your life!

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

As with other types of policy, income protection applications are likely to also require a GP report and information about the control of the condition, any secondary conditions and adrenal crisis. The thing that will be of particular interest here, in addition to the above and your day to day health and medication, is the impact that Addison’s has on your ability to go to work. So the insurer will want to know how much, if any, time you’ve taken off work as the result of the condition.

If your ability to go to work is unaffected by Addison’s and your symptoms are very mild, then you may be able to get an income protection policy on standard terms. For most cases of Addison’s disease, it is likely that income protection will be offered at a higher premium or with exclusions.

If you do find that the terms for income protection simply don’t suit you, then accident, sickness and unemployment cover might be more suitable for you. This sort of policy will provide you with a monthly income replacement of 12 to 24 months if you find yourself unable to work due to long term injury, disability or voluntary redundancy.

Unlike income protection cover applications, there’s no medical underwriting required. In other words, the fact that you have Addison’s Disease won’t have any bearing on the terms you are offered. That does make the application process simpler, but you should also be aware than that you won’t be able to make a claim relating to pre-existing medical conditions on the policy.

If you’re planning a holiday or a getaway any time soon, then speak to a specialist travel insurance broker who can help you to get the right cover based on your condition. Find out more by visiting our travel page here.

Common Questions

Applying for a mortgage is stressful enough without having to worry about how your health condition might impact on your ability to secure life insurance. But yes, we could still help you to secure appropriate life insurance with Addisons Disease. For those whose condition is well controlled, standard terms might be available, while others might find they’re offered higher premiums.

If you have been refused life insurance due to your health please do not be concerned, we deal with specialist insurers to make sure you have the cover you need.

It’s most likely that any prospective insurer will want to see a medical report from your GP. Typically speaking, this is acquired at their own expense and is used to help build a picture of your condition, how well managed it is and how your day to day health is.

For those with a well managed condition and few severe symptoms, this can be really beneficial in reassuring the life insurance provider that you’re not a significant risk. Some people find that some insurers decline their life insurance applications due to their health, it is our job to step in and find the insurer that suits you!
