When applying for life insurance, Iran is seen as a country that most life insurers want to know about.
Insurers do not see Iran as a typical holiday destination, so they often like to check why you are going there.
When you speak with our advisers they will ask you:
- Why are you travelling to Iran?
- How long will you be staying in Iran?
- When will your trip to Iran start?
When travelling to Iran the insurer will be interested in knowing if this is a one-off trip, or if you plan on going there multiples times in the next couple of years.
If you are planning on travelling to Iran you can find that some insurers will not be able to offer you life insurance. That’s some, not all, which is why our experienced are so valuable to get you the best options for life insurance.
The terms of your life insurance can be influenced upon whether you are a civilian or working in the military.
Your reason for travel to Iran and the length of time that you will be there for, will be the key factors on whether you get life insurance at normal terms or at an increased premium.
British citizens who have moved abroad can often still access life insurance and critical illness cover in the UK. There are specific rules that you must follow to be eligible for new life insurance and critical illness policies, and we are here to strip out the jargon and get you the cover that you need.
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover for people travelling to Iran will be assessed upon how long and how often you will be there for. As with life insurance, if your travel to Iran is due to a high risk occupation e.g. military, security, etc. then your application will be assessed with focus on your employment.
Military personnel may find that some parts of the critical illness cover are excluded from the claims set, or that an occupational exclusion is place on the policy. This means that your policy will either have certain conditions removed from your claimable illnesses such as loss of limbs, coma and traumatic head injury, or, state that any claim made due to circumstances related to your occupation will not be approved.
In the past civilians have been able to get critical illness cover whilst travelling to Iran however this is now often restricted to specialist policies.
Our advisers will research the insurance market for you and give you a clear insight into the best critical illness options for you.
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for military personnel or civilians travelling to Iran will need to be placed with specialist insurance providers who may or may not consider the application.
Military personnel will find arranging income protection very tricky within the UK. It is usually only available if you are on some form of sabbatical.
If you intend to travel to Iran in the future you will need to inform the insurer of how you will be staying in the country and may need to detail the exact locations where you will be working or visiting. You might also need to detail the methods of transport that you will use whilst there.
Where your work requires that you travel to Iran the industry that you work in (e.g. energy industry)and job role (e.g. security personnel) that you have, will be important to share
It’s likely that your income protection policy premiums will be increased, if the insurer is able to offer you the cover. Our advisers are here to help you find a way to protect your income, that works for you.

Hi, today I’m carrying on the CuraVision ABC series with Mr. I. I’m mixing it up a little bit today.
Ian came to use a 38 year old male, non-smoker with absolutely perfect health, BMI, no issues whatsoever. His risk came from his work. Ian’s primary residence was the UK. He had a couple of children here, but the majority of the time he spent in Iran, working.
There’s a couple of different things that came into play when we were arranging his life insurance. We had to look at a specialist company who were able to consider the life insurance with him being in Iran. It is considered to be a high risk area in regards for a life insurance claim. It’s also known as a sanctioned territory, so there is a concern in a sense, as to where any claim would be paid to if you were in Iran at the time of dying.
So what we had to do was establish his protection needs, so we came to a figure of level life insurance of £300,000, to provide fast security to his children for a number of years in the event of his death. And we put the policy in place for five years. Now that being said, it’s because Ian felt that he was going to be in Iran working potentially for the next five years also. And whilst he’s in Iran, the premiums for that life insurance policy are significantly higher than if he was not in Iran.
So it’s level life insurance at £300,000 over five years, and that came to a monthly premium of £190 per month. Now for Ian, this was affordable it was within his budget, and he felt that that was correct for him and for the amount of coverage that he wanted to provide for his children, to insure that they could maintain their lifestyle, in the event that he were to pass.
A significantly important thing with his policy, though, was because of being a sanctioned territory, we had to make sure that the policy was put into trust, so that any proceeds from a life insurance claim would be retained within the UK to his children and wouldn’t be moving outside of the UK system. And the intention is that once he isn’t work in Iran anymore, we will be able to review his cover and find him something that’s, it will be a much lower premium, and when he returns to the UK and can start to work in this territory.
