Water Sports & Life Insurance
Water sports are a fun way to get out into nature and get an adrenaline fix at the same time. Whether you are white water rafting or toddling along your local river in a canoe, it’s a good idea to know what this can mean for your insurances.
With life insurance there are some key things that our advisers are going to ask you:
- What sport are you doing?
- How often are you doing this?
- Is this purely a hobby?
- Are you doing this in the UK or abroad?
- Are you taking parting in any competitions?
We might have more questions when you tell us what you are doing. As an example for scuba diving we will also be asking you if you used mixed air, if you do any cave diving or wreck exploring, and the maximum depths that you go to.
A lot of the time water sports do not make a huge impact on your life insurance application. Insurers are mainly focused upon things like scuba diving, sailing and any extreme versions of water activities that you are doing.
One-off events that you are doing on holiday are unlikely to come up on a lot of life insurance applications, but it’s important to watch out and carefully go through all of the wording to make sure that you are disclosing everything properly.
This is where our award winning advisers truly stand out, as we know life insurance applications inside and out and will be able to find the best insurer for you.
Water Sports & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
As with life insurance many hobbies such as surfing and jet-skiing are unlikely to cause any concern to insurers when it comes to critical illness cover for water sports.
Occasional sailing and scuba diving will normally be accepted at standard terms, but there are extra key bits of information that can quickly change this.
If for example you take part in transoceanic sailing or competitions some insurance companies might offer you non-standard terms for critical illness cover.
In order to figure out the terms they can give you insurers will consider where in the world you are doing your sport, your experience and qualifications, and where applicable the speed of vehicle, maximum underwater depth and group or solo activities.
Our expert advisers will find you the most competitive critical illness policy that suits your needs.
Water Sports & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection when you take part in water sports may be accepted at standard terms, provided that you have not had multiple injuries from the sport in the past.
Insurers will want to know what sport you do, how often you do it, if you are in a group or solo, and if you will take part in competitive events.
A key thing with income protection is that the policies can come with exclusions for anything that the insurer thinks places you at a higher risk of a claim. So if in recent years you have had back pain, a broken wrist, or torn a muscle, you can find that there is a exclusion for claims directly related to that part of your body.
This isn’t going to sound ideal, we know, but the policy will cover you for many situations and it’s a good idea to chat through these with an adviser.

Common Questions
Hi, maybe. If you had planned to go scuba diving before you took out the policy and said no if they asked you about it, then you should let them know. But if you had no intention to go scuba diving when you took it out, then everything should be ok. A one-off scuba dive on holiday is unlikely to affect your life insurance application, if you’re in any doubt we can help to review what you have set up and make sure that everything is as it should be.
