Vitamin B12 Anaemia or Folate Anaemia & Life Insurance
We know that having vitamin B12 anaemia can be tiring, but you can still lead a full and active life. It is our job to listen to you, your health and your needs, and find an insurer that suits you.
Things we need to know:
- When were you diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency?
- What medication are you taking?
- Are you currently receiving vitamin B12 injections?
- Is the vitamin B12 anaemia caused by another illness?
- Does the anaemia affect your daily living?
- Is your GP happy with your current B12 levels?
Life Insurance for people with a vitamin B12 (or folate anaemia) should be available at standard terms with many insurers. Insurance providers that you approach will want to know if you have regular health checks with your GP, whether you have experienced any recent symptoms, if the vitamin B12 anaemia is under control and what medications are in use.
If you are outstanding investigations for vitamin B12 anaemia, or your levels are not back into the normal range, then you could find that some insurers decline or postpone your application for Life Insurance. You will be able to arrange your Life Insurance with a specialist insurer, if this is the case.
Vitamin B12 Anaemia or Folate Anaemia & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover for those with vitamin B12, or folate anaemia, may be available at standard terms with some insurance providers. The insurer will want to know what symptoms are caused by the anaemia, any treatments that are in use and if you are regularly monitored by your GP. Depending upon the severity of the condition terms for critical illness cover may be offered at standard or non-standard terms (premium increase).
If your vitamin B12 anaemia is not back within a normal range, or you are waiting for further tests, you may need to speak with a specialist insurer for your critical illness cover.
Vitamin B12 Anaemia or Folate Anaemia & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for people with vitamin B12 anaemia that is well under control, may be available at normal terms with some insurers. The insurer that you approach will be particularly interested in whether or not the anaemia has caused you to have any time off work. It is possible that the insurance provider may ask to view a report from your GP to establish how the vitamin B12 deficiency affects your health. Where income protection is available the policy acceptance terms will either be at standard or special terms (premium increase).
If you find that income protection is not available due to your anaemia, it could be worthwhile considering accident, sickness and unemployment cover. This type of policy is not medically underwritten, which means that your vitamin B12 anaemia will not need to be discussed when you apply for cover. Accident, sickness and unemployment policies can provide you with a monthly income replacement for between 12 and 24 months, if you are unable to work due to ill health or involuntary redundancy. It is important to note, that any claim related to the vitamin B12 anaemia will be excluded from the policy.

What is Vitamin B12 Anaemia or Folate Anaemia?
Vitamin B12 or folate anaemia occurs when the body starts to develop red blood cells that are larger than normal (known as megaloblastic or macrocytic cells). The condition is usually caused by pernicious anaemia which is diagnosed when the body’s immune system begins to attack the ‘intrinsic factor’ protein in the stomach, preventing the absorption of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 anaemia can also be caused by a dietary imbalance, gastrointestinal conditions and as a reaction to some medications (e.g. proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Folate anaemia can also develop as a result of a poor diet, digestive conditions, excessive urination, pregnancy, cancer and some medications (e.g. anticonvulsants).

Common Questions
Maybe. In most cases, having vitamin B12 anaemia will not affect your Life Insurance application. You should be able to get standard terms for Life Insurance. But, if you are outstanding any tests, or your vitamin B12 levels are still outside the normal range, some insurers may decline Life Insurance, until your health stabilises.
Yes. You may find that you are declined Income Protection insurance by some insurers, because they will be cautious that it has caused you to have time off work before. Not to worry though, there are income protection policies that you can have that are not medically underwritten, if standard insurers are not an option.
