Gliders & Life Insurance
Gliding can be an incredible experience and I’m quite jealous when I spot the one that pops up most days of the summer over Filey.
When you take part in gliding you know that there are so many safety precautions in place, but the very nature of you being up in the air and not on the ground, can make insurers a bit more cautious.
When you speak with one of our advisers we will ask you:
- How often are you gliding?
- How many air hours do you have?
- Are you with an instructor or solo?
- Are you gliding in the UK or abroad?
Life insurance applications are generally assessed based upon the amount of hours that you take part in gliding. A one-off experience is not something that would generally concern insurers and if this is the case you are likely to see normal terms for cover, with the right insurer.
Insurers will have set guidelines that say that if you fly over X amount of hours per year, that they will assess your application as non-standard. This means that they will increase the premium that you pay for life insurance.
Increases to life insurance premiums are done in a couple of ways, one way isn’t too intense, the other way can lead to what might feel like silly premiums.
Our advisers will find the most competitive premiums for life insurance for you.
Gliders & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
When it comes to applying for critical illness cover, if you are a qualified pilot and do occasional flights you may be able to get normal terms with some insurers.
You can find that when it comes to high risk sports that insurers may want to add an exclusion to the policy for illnesses that are caused by the gliding. Many of the conditions in a critical illness policy would not be caused by gliding, so whilst an exclusion never sounds great, there is still a lot of value in the policy.
Our expert advisers will find the right critical illness policy for you.
Gliders & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Gliders income protection can be arranged at standard terms if you approach the correct insurer.
Some insurers will not want to offer you income protection if you regularly fly. It can be quite interesting as what an insurer thinks of as regular flying, might be completely different to what you think.
You may find that some insurers want to increase your policy premiums or places an exclusion on your policy for claims relating to any gliding injuries that you have. Each insurer is different in how they view gliding and what income protection terms they will offer.
Our award winning advisers will find the best income protection policy to suit your needs.

Common Questions
Hi, it’s lovely to hear from you. I know that area, we are close by it and Sutton Bank is on the route to some of my family. Telling the life insurance provider about it depends upon if you have the policy in place already or not.
If you already have life insurance and it’s been set up a while and you had no intention of gliding when you took it out, you do not need to tell the life insurance provider. If you have not taken out life insurance yet it’s a good to speak with an adviser so that they can check with the insurer how best to answer the sporting questions for you.
I hope you have fun!
