Hemopneumothorax & Life Insurance
Experiencing a hemopneumothorax is a life changing experience, for many reasons. It can really make you consider your future and making sure that your family will be ok if you’re no longer around.
Life insurance can be something that you start to consider, or you might even want to do a review of what you already have, as a just in case.
To find the right life insurance for you we will ask you:
- When did the hemopneumothorax happen?
- How many times have you experienced this?
- Are you fully recovered from the hemopneumothorax?
- Do you use any form of nicotine products?
If you have fully recovered from the hemopneumothorax with no lasting symptoms, you might be able to get life insurance at normal terms. This will depend upon the cause of the hemopneumothorax and how long ago it was since it happened.
If you have not fully recovered from the hemopneumothorax it is likely that most insurers will postpone or decline your life insurance application, until you are better.
Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.
Hemopneumothorax & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
When you have experienced a hemopneumothorax your best options for critical illness cover will be once you have completely recovered from it. You could find that you are able to access critical illness cover at standard terms depending upon your circumstances.
The cause of your hemopneumothorax, time since it was diagnosed and your recovery, will all play a part in the terms that you are offered. There are some situations where critical illness cover has an exclusion due to the hemopneumothorax, and in some cases an insurer might decline your application. Please don’t worry if that happens, we speak to a lot of insurers and also have access to specialist policies that could work well for you.

Hemopneumothorax & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection is a policy where it doesn’t take much for an insurer to place an exclusion on the cover. If someone already has a health condition that significantly increases the risk of a claim, the insurer won’t offer insurance for this situation.
If you have fully recovered from the hemopneumothorax and it happened a while ago, then there can be potential options to access income protection without any exclusions.
Our advisers are here to make sure that you get the best insurance policy to protect your income.

What is a Hemopneumothorax?
Hemopneumothorax is a condition where the chest wall has experienced trauma – this could be from a range of situations such as a broken rib, contact sports, a car accident, a stabbing or a gunshot wound. Blood and/or air fill the space between the lungs and the chest cavity, and these need to be drained, as the lungs cannot expand to fill the space that was there before.

Common Questions
Hi, it’s lovely to hear from you and I hope that you are now ok after your fall. The cost of life insurance depends upon quite a few things. Your age, height, weight, health, your work and how much life insurance you want.
It is quite likely that the insurer your life insurance application is placed with, will ask your permission to speak with your GP to confirm your overall health now.
Once the insurer has seen this report the price of your life insurance will be confirmed. We will let you know what we think your life insurance will cost, once we have spoken and gone through your circumstances, before an application is put forward. You can then decide if the price of the life insurance feels right to you, before you go through the full application process.

“Life insurance. I had been refused life insurance multiple times due to a medical concern from years ago. Krystle at Cura financial services spent the time to listen to all my concerns and was able to find life insurance cover despite the medical challenges.
