What is a Pneumothorax?

A pneumothorax develops as a result of air filling the space around the lungs, making it difficult for them to expand. Problems with air leaking from the lungs into the space can cause this condition, although external factors such as trauma to the chest area allowing air into this space, can also be involved. In cases where a Pneumothorax is large, draining the air is necessary. People who scuba-dive or go mountain climbing may experience this due to the changes in air pressure.
