Sickle Cell Anaemia Trait & Life Insurance
Having been diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia trait you may be wondering what that will change when applying for life insurance. Our team of advisers are here to help right from the start.
One of the key things to say is that there is a big difference between having sickle cell anaemia and having sickle cell anaemia trait. By having the trait you do carry the sickle cell gene but you do not actively have the condition. Insurers are allowed to ask you if you have been diagnosed with a genetic condition, but they are not allowed to ask you about genetic testing that you have had done.
Things we need to know to help find you the right insurer:
- When were you diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia trait?
- Have you needed any counselling?
We will ask you about counselling as we do need to discuss mental health conditions, as part of most life insurance applications. Please be assured that insurers are very understanding of a need for counselling support if you have found out that you carry the sickle cell gene.
It’s also important for us to share that if you have been though or are going through any kinds of fertility treatment due to you having sickle cell anaemia trait, the insurers are also understanding of this. Many life insurance applications will ask about recent tests or investigations, but specifically state that they don’t need to know about fertility treatments.
Life insurance for people with sickle cell anaemia trait should be available at standard terms with most insurers. It is unlikely that an insurer will ask about whether you have sickle cell anaemia trait. It does not come up in the common questions that are asked.
Insurers do often ask about family medical history and with some they might say any hereditary condition, that might lead to then knowing that there is sickle cell anaemia in your immediate family. If this is the case you can choose to volunteer that you have had genetic testing that has shown that you have the trait and not active sickle cell anaemia, if this might influence the life insurance terms that you are offered.
Our advisers are here to help you understand what the insurers do and don’t need to know. We go through these applications on a daily basis and will find you the right insurers to match your circumstances.

Sickle Cell Anaemia Trait & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical illness cover for people living with sickle cell anaemia trait will likely be available at normal terms with many insurers. As with life insurance, it would not be typical of an insurance provider to ask if you have sickle cell anaemia trait.
Some insurers will ask about hereditary genetic conditions in their questions about family medical history, but not all of them do. Our advisers research the market to make sure that you get a critical illness policy that best suits your needs.
Sickle Cell Anaemia Trait & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for people with sickle cell anaemia trait is likely to be available at standard terms, provided that you have no other medical disclosures to make on your application.
The insurer will be interested in any details regarding time off work that you have had in recent years due to your health. It’s a good idea to get an income protection policy that is arranged on what is known as an ‘own occupation’ definition.
Our advisers will help you to understand the technical parts of income protection and build you a policy that matches your needs.

Common Questions
It is really difficult to hear that you have been declined life insurance and I’m sorry that your sister has experienced this. We would be happy to help if she wants to get in touch.
With you having the gene, but not actively having sickle cell anaemia, most insurers are likely to accept your application for life insurance at standard terms. Insurers are not allowed to ask you about genetic testing for sickle cell trait, so it’s unlikely that this will come up in the life insurance application.
