Hairy Cell Leukaemia & Life Insurance

Hairy Cell Leukaemia & Life InsuranceBeing told that you have cancer is often a life changing event and it’s quite common to start making lots of plans for the future. One of these plans can be life insurance.

When you apply for life insurance in the UK, having cancer is something that will usually come up in the question set of the insurer. We’re here to make sure that you find the best insurer to offer you life insurance at the right price.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • When were you diagnosed with Hairy Cell Leukaemia?
  • Do you have Hairy Cell Leukaemia or Hairy Cell Leukaemia variant?
  • What treatments for Hairy Cell Leukaemia have you had?

When you are living with Hairy Cell Leukaemia there are potential options for life insurance, but it’s essential that your circumstances are checked fully with the insurer before you apply. This is to make the life insurance application process nicer for you. It’s best to know early on which insurers can and cannot look at your life insurance application, and if they can, what price your life insurance is likely to be.

Your options for life insurance will depend upon how long ago you were diagnosed with HCL, your age, what treatment you have had and the plans going forward.

It’s very likely that your life insurance will not be offered at basic premiums. This never sounds great, but it’s better to know what to expect rather than go through the whole application process and the pricing suddenly change. Life insurance itself is usually really cheap, so when these increases happen they are not usually as intense as people think they will be.

Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you. We will research the market for you before any life insurance application is done, so that we can give you the most accurate indication of what the price is likely to be. You can then decide what pricing feels right for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Unfortunately at the moment personal critical illness cover options are very limited, if you have Hairy Cell Leukaemia. It can be possible but the insurance will have an exclusion for any claim that can be linked to the HCL, which is a really large exclusion.

There are sometimes options for critical illness cover through employers, that could be a good option for you. They will still come with exclusions, but the overall quality of the insurance is higher than the personal routes.

Our award winning advisers are here to make sure that you get the right insurer to match you and your health.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

There can sometimes be options for income protection if you have Hairy Cell Leukaemia and have not had any chemotherapy or radiotherapy in the last few years. There are very specific eligibility questions for the income protection insurance and our advisers will chat with you before an application is placed, to make sure that the best insurer and income protection product is chosen for you.

It is quite likely that if an insurer can offer you income protection that the claims have a maximum payout time of 2-5 years, per claimable event.

Similarly to critical illness cover, options for income protection through your employer will probably be a higher quality for you when you’re living with cancer. It an be worth chatting to your employer to see if they have a group income protection policy that you can access. It might be that you are automatically covered by an income protection policy that they have in place for employees already.

Our advisers are here to make sure that you get the best insurance policy to protect your income.

Common Questions

Hi, it’s lovely to hear from you and I hope that you are as ok as possible, given your recent news. To let you know the best insurer for you, I would need to chat through some more details, as I would want to make sure that I fully manage your expectations.

You can find that insurers like to wait a bit of time from initial diagnosis of cancer to being able to consider you for life insurance. Hairy Cell Leukaemia does usually develop slowly, but the insurers will want to know about your treatment plan and how the cancer is progressing over time. You can find that if you are outstanding chemotherapy or radiotherapy that most mainstream insurers will decline your application for life insurance.

Depending upon your age there are likely a few life insurance policies that you can take out when such treatment is still due to take place, but you must be made fully aware of the exclusions that come with these products. I’m more than happy to chat through these with you, so that you can get a better idea of how life insurance may be arranged for you.

Amazing service! Cura have been great. They have found me adequate life insurance and chased multiple companies whilst giving us the time to process anything else adhoc (especially when it came to my Consultants). It took 5 months but we got there! Thank you so much! - 5
