Quadriplegia & Life Insurance

Cirrhosis & Life InsuranceLiving with cirrhosis of the liver is something that comes up in a lot of life insurance applications in the UK.

Insurers are usually interested if there is something affecting one of your major organs. It’s quite likely that if you have cirrhosis that your options for life insurance will need to be supported by a report your GP (the insurer arranges this).

It is also really important to know that there are some insurers who will not accept applications for people that have been diagnosed with cirrhosis. Where life insurance is possible the premiums are generally higher than the basic premiums that insurers usually charge.

Some key bits of information we’ll need to ask you to find the best insurer for your life insurance:

  • When were you diagnosed with cirrhosis?
  • What was the cause of your cirrhosis?
  • What are your current liver function test levels?
  • Have you had a liver transplant?

At the moment, most insurers in the UK cannot accept applications for people living with cirrhosis of the liver. It is likely that your life insurance will need to be placed with a specialist insurer. You may find that they say that your life insurance can be arranged, but for a maximum of 10 years.

You might be able to get life insurance over a longer term, but this is unlikely if your cirrhosis has been caused by alcohol and you are still drinking.

Big factors in determining your life insurance options will be the cause of your cirrhosis, what your currently LFTs are and if you are due to have surgery in the future. If you are due to have surgery you will find that the insurers postpone your application until after your surgery has completed.

There are life insurances in the UK that you can access without detailing your cirrhosis, but, most of these will have an exclusion relating to any claims linked to the cirrhosis. This is a big exclusion and it’s a good idea to get advice before you arrange this type of life insurance.

Our award winning advisers are here to help you and get you the life insurance that you need and put your mind at ease.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Unfortunately at the moment critical illness cover is not available with mainstream insurers, if you have cirrhosis. There are specialist policies that you can access, but they will exclude any claim relating to the cirrhosis.

This kind of exclusion for a critical illness policy is very extensive and it’s important to get

Our industry trained advisers can talk through the different insurance products that you can access and let you know how they will support you.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Your options for income protection will be reduced, due to the fact that you have cirrhosis of the liver. As with life insurance it’s not just having cirrhosis that influences the options, but also the reason that the cirrhosis developed, that will alter your options.

Most full income protection policies will unfortunately not be available, but there might be some short-term options. The short-term options means insurances that can potentially replace your income for you to a maximum of 1, 2, maybe 5 years per claimable event.

Whilst there might be options for income protection for you, it is important to know that any claims relating to cirrhosis will be excluded from the policy.

Our advisers will be able to give you guidance on the best ways to protect your income.

Common Questions

Hi, it’s lovely to hear from you. To be able to help I will need to know a bit more about the liver condition that you have, there is quite a few. Sometime people have a blood test and for some reason their body is having a moment and their liver function tests are slightly out. The blood tests are repeated, come back normal and all is fine with the insurer. So it might be that there is a quick solution with a repeat blood test.

If you have a liver condition that is considered to be more serious such as liver cancer or cirrhosis of the liver, this can lead some insurers to decline life insurance. It depends upon how your liver is currently functioning, any treatment that you’ve had or are having, and the outlook for the future. The best thing is for us to arrange a time to chat and I can provide some more guidance specific to you.
