ADEM & Life Insurance

ADEM & Life InsuranceExperiencing acute disseminated encephalomyelitis can be a very worrying experience, that can take a while to get over. When we have health shocks it can really make us think about the future and life insurance can be something that people want to get.

There are quite a few insurers that should be able to look at your application for life insurance, if you have recovered from the ADEM.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • How many ADEM attacks have you had?
  • When did the ADEM flare-ups happen?
  • Do you have any lasting complications from the ADEM?

We have supported people who have had acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and continued to have ongoing symptoms. This can be things like reduced vision, walking difficulties and bladder and/or bowel complications. The insurers will mainly want to know how much the ADEM and any long lasting symptoms affect your ability to work and do day to day activities.

You may find that if you have experienced acute disseminated encephalomyelitis even if you have fully recovered with no longer lasting side effects, that the insurers ask to see a report from your GP to confirm you diagnosis and current health. This is very likely to happen if you do have long lasting symptoms. I see these reports as a positive as you then know that the insurer has all the accurate information and dates about your health, when they are assessing your application.

It could be that your life insurance application is offered at standard premiums, but it is more likely that they will increase your policy premium due to you having experienced ADEM. This really does depend upon how long ago the acute disseminated encephalomyelitis happened and your health now.

ADEM can at times be caused by genetics. Insurers are not allowed to ask you about any genetic testing that you have had and this will not come up in your life insurance application. They can however ask if you have been advised to have any medical or genetic screening due to a health condition that a close family member has had.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

You can find that getting critical illness cover can be more difficult than life insurance, if you have experienced acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. This is because ADEM is closely linked to some health conditions that are claimable on a critical illness contract e.g. multiple sclerosis.

If you apply for critical illness cover it is essential that research is done with insurance underwriters beforehand, to make sure that you know what the final pricing will be and if there will any exclusions. It is possible that if critical illness cover is available to you that there will an exclusion for multiple sclerosis on your policy.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

When you apply for income protection the insurer will likely ask questions about your ADEM, depending upon when you experienced it and if you have any long lasting symptoms.

If you have not experienced acute disseminated encephalomyelitis in some time and you are fully recovered, you might be able to arrange income protection at standard terms with some insurers.

If you do have any ongoing symptoms after experiencing ADEM then you might find that claims related to these are excluded from your income protection policy.

Life insurance at last. Excellent service, got life insurance which met my needs and importantly considered my ongoing health requirements. Where mainstay insurers did not consider my insurance due to my health despite being active and healthy. - 5
