MRSA & Life Insurance

MRSA & Life InsuranceMRSA is a bacteria that lives on the skin and may people have no idea that they have it until they need to go into hospital or a care setting.

It can be quite unsettling to find out that you have MRSA as there has been a lot of news about this superbug and how dangerous it can be. There isn’t as much talk about when MRSA is found in pre hospital checks and people get treatment to remove the bacteria and there has been no issues at all.

When applying for life insurance having MRSA might come up in the insurers questions and we’re here to help you find the best insurer for you.

To get things started we will ask you:

  • When were you told that you have MRSA?
  • Why were you tested for MRSA?
  • Did you experience any complications from having MRSA?
  • Are you now fully recovered?

The question about why were you tested for MRSA is to help us check any other health conditions that led to the diagnosis. If you were due to go into hospital for treatment and MRSA was found before you were admitted and treated, it’s far more likely that the insurer will be interested in your reason for being in hospital rather than the MRSA.

If you have been told that you have MRSA and have had no complications from the bacteria then there should be no concern in arranging life insurance. If the MRSA was found due to another health condition, then it will probably be this other medical condition that the insurers will look at.

Our expert advisers are to make sure that your life insurance policy is placed with the best insurer for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

If you have been told that you have the MRSA bacteria and have been treated and fully recovered, then you should be able to get critical illness cover with most insurers in the UK.

The options that you have for critical illness cover will depend upon the reasons that you were found to have MRSA and any secondary conditions that you have.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

You should have plenty of options for income protection if you have had MRSA in the past and have completed your treatment. If you had a health condition that led to your MRSA diagnosis then it could be that this medical condition influences the best income protection policy for you.

What is MRSA?

MRSA lives on about a third of people, and whilst harmless, if it becomes an infection inside the body it can become very serious. People in hospital are more likely to get this bacteria for a number of reasons including being on an intravenous drip, having a catheter, amongst other things. MRSA is also more likely to develop if someone has a health condition that is lowering their immune system. In a medical environment MRSA can become a superbug due to it’s resistance to most common antibiotics plus the very nature of people being in hospital or care due to not being well, and how easily MRSA can be spread.

Despite its severity, by using specific anitibiotics, MRSA can be treated if caught in time.

Also: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

Linked with: Sepsis, pneumonia, endocarditis, Meticillin Susceptible Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA), cancer, HIV

Some of the symptoms people may experience when they have MRSA:

  • Enhanced hygiene practices
  • Heightened caution in hospital
  • Antibiotics
  • Surgery

Common Questions

Hi, thank you for getting in touch and I hope that you are ok now. If you are fully recovered from the MRSA you should be able to get life insurance at standard terms. The insurer will want to check the reasons for you appendix removal as a just in case, but most of the time a straightforward appendix removal should not cause any concern to the insurers.
