Transsexuals & Life Insurance
We appreciate that applying for insurance as a transsexual may cause you some concern, wondering about what you may need to talk about, and who you will be speaking to.
We are here to help you and we will talk through different options that we can look at.
There’s just a few things we’d need to know from you to get started:
- When did your surgery for gender reassignment take place?
- What medications do you take?
- Are you currently undergoing any treatment?
- Do you have any lasting post-surgery complications?
At the moment protection insurance applications can must be submitted with either a male or female gender identification. We appreciate that this might not be suitable for and we are sorry that this is the case.
Whilst we need to put your application forward with a specific gender, your adviser will note your gender identification and pronouns, so that we can communicate with you in the right way.
Life insurance for people that are transsexuals can be available at normal terms with many insurance providers.
As well as asking when your gender reassignment surgery took place, any medication that you take, most insurers will ask about counselling or psychiatric treatment that you have had pre and post operation. Our team are specifically trained to ask you these questions in a sensitive manner, without judgement.
Being transsexual will not have any bearing upon your Life Insurance policy, provided that you are in good health and there are no other risk factors. Due to legal changes in 2012, insurers must now offer equal premium rates for men and women, which means that your gender will not affect the Life Insurance terms that you are offered.
If you do not want to talk about your medical history, there are insurers that we can apply to, that will not ask about these things. They have very specific terms and conditions and it’s important that we get a chance to talk you through these.
Transsexuals & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
Critical Illness Cover for people who are transsexual should also be available at standard terms. Your application will typically need to include details about any counselling you have received, hormone treatments you have taken, and when the surgery occurred.
Being transsexual does not increase the risk of you claiming on the Critical Illness Cover, so normal terms should be available with most insurers.
Transsexuals & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income Protection for transsexuals should be available at normal terms. The insurer you apply to for Income Protection will want to know if you have had any time off work due to your health. Depending on how long it has been since you had gender reassignment surgery, time you took off work to have the operation and recover, will need to be detailed.
Provided that there has been no lasting complications post surgery, and there are no other medical disclosures, being transsexual will not affect your Income Protection application with most insurers.

Who are Transsexuals?
Transsexuals are people who have been born into a physical gender that they do not identify with, and have undergone gender reassignment surgery. Physically changing to the opposite gender is not a simple task and most people who take this step will have had to seek counselling, take hormone treatments, and live as the opposite gender for some time, to be certain that they want to change sex. Gender reassignment surgery can be a fulfilling experience, with the feeling that the physical body matches the person inside.

Common Questions
Thank you for contacting us and I do appreciate that it isn’t always the easiest to speak about your health with somebody you don’t know. There are quite a few things we can do, we have a mixture of female and male advisers so if there is anybody of a particular gender you would prefer to speak to, we can arrange that for you.
We can discuss things via email, or potentially provide you with the applications forms to complete yourself. What would be very useful would be to speak to you so that we can make sure when doing the applications, you’re getting the right applications for the insurers that will be supportive of you. We can work with you however is right for you, and make sure we adapt to your needs.
I’m sorry that this is what you have been told, I imagine you have been told you’ve been declined life insurance and it is never nice to hear that.
As you’re due to have surgery and there are risks of a surgery with that level of anaesthesia, a lot of insurers on the standard market would like the surgery to have been completed and for you to have recovered before offering a policy.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get life insurance, there are more specialist options and it’s worthwhile us having a chat to go through all the potential terms and conditions.
