Tennis & Life Insurance

Tennis & Life InsuranceOne of our boys has just started tennis lessons and he loves them! We are really happy that he is willing to try all sorts of sports. Here’s hoping for a win at Wimbledon when he’s older!

Life insurance companies are all in favour of regular exercise as it shows your dedication to keeping in shape, and of course it helps you keep fit and healthy through the years. When it comes to life insurance, playing tennis as a hobby usually doesn’t have any effect and insurers will usually offer standard terms.

To double check this our advisers will ask you:

  • How often do you play tennis?
  • Do you take part in competitions?
  • Is your tennis in the UK or abroad?

If you play tennis in your free time and enjoy doing this sport as a hobby with your friends or with some lessons, then life insurance shouldn’t be an issue and may be available at standard terms.

Do you play tennis professionally? Then it’s possible that your policy will also come at standard terms. You may find that the specific add-on Waiver of Premium (WOP) is not included in your policy, or comes with an exclusion related to tennis. Waiver of Premium basically means that in the event of you being ill and unable to work for more than 26 weeks, the insurance provider will keep your policy active without you having to pay the premiums until you start working again. This is of course insurance jargon and we will be able to explain what this means to you, when we speak.

Our award winning advisers will find the best life insurance to meet your needs and give you peace of mind.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Getting Critical Illness Cover shouldn’t be a problem and standard terms will probably be available, if you play tennis as a hobby.

If tennis is your occupation and you play tennis professionally, standard terms might not be available to you for critical illness cover. As there is the risk of injuries associated with playing tennis at a professional level, for example to your elbows, shoulders, knees or lower back, you may find that Total Permanent Disability (TPD) will be excluded from the policy.

TPD means that if you are ill and you can’t work again in your current job, then the policy can potentially pay out. So in the case of professional tennis players, having this option can often be excluded from your policy. In a nutshell it wouldn’t take much for you to have an injury or develop an illness where your coach and medical professionals say that you have to stop playing professionally. It’s potentially worth considering career ending insurance if you want to be insured for being unable to play tennis professionally again.

Our expert advisers will find the right insurer and best critical illness policy to match you and your hobby.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Playing tennis as a hobby shouldn’t have an impact on getting income protection. If you’ve had any recent injuries such as tennis elbow or any ankle or knee injuries, the policy may come with some exclusions. An exclusion never sounds great, but it is sometimes possible to review your policy at specific times to get these kinds of exclusions removed.

When you are a professional tennis player one of the most common ways to protect your income is through career ending insurance. This is a specialist policy that we can help you to arrange.

Our advisers will make sure that you are offered the best terms possible for income protection.

Are you going abroad to play tennis? It’s a good idea to make sure that your travel insurance doesn’t have exclusions for sports. We suggest speaking with a specialist travel insurance broker. You can find more details on our travel insurance page.

There are some insurance policies that allow you to earn rewards and reduce your policy premium, if you are fit and active. Being a tennis player is a perfect match to the way that the insurer monitors your fitness levels, so that you can access these benefits.

Common Questions

Hi, it’s lovely to hear from you. I would not expect an exclusion on life insurance or critical illness cover for the knee that you twisted. Sometimes you can find that there are exclusions on waiver of premium that is an add-on with these policies, but that will really come down to if you had a specific injury or not.

For income protection you might find that there is an exclusion for you knee, it depends upon how long ago the twist was, what treatment or medication you needed and if you had to take any time off work. Let’s plan a time to have a proper chat and we can go through the options together.

The type of horse riding that you do may need to be disclosed on your life insurance application. Insurers are often not bothered if you are just doing wandering with your horse in your local area, as a hobby to get away and clear your mind.

If your horse riding has any professional activities or if you take part in competitions or show jumps, then the insurer may offer your life insurance at non-standard terms. This would be an increase to the life insurance premium. Life insurance premiums are very low to start off with and a price increase is not something any of us wants to hear, but the increases are usually far less than you expect.
