Journalists & Life Insurance

JournalistBeing a journalist can be an exciting role. One day you might be taken to a far off exotic place for that latest scoop, then you might spend 4 months at your desk.

Your job as a journalist may have an impact on your life insurance, or it may not have any effect at all.

To find the right insurer for you we will ask you:

  • Do you need to spend time outside of the UK as part of your work?
  • How much time do you typically spend outside of the UK every year?
  • What countries do you visit as part of your work?
  • How much you mileage do you do for your work each year?

The main factor for you is whether your job requires frequent or long periods of travel outside of the UK, especially in high risk locations. If you are not travelling to a high risk location, it’s quite likely that you should be able to get life insurance at standard terms.

When looking for life insurance in the UK, insurers often ask about your overseas work-related travel that lasts longer than a week. If you are living outside of the UK for your work, then there can be still be options for you for life insurance, but your life insurance will need to be placed with specific insurers that can support this.

Our advisers are here to help you find the right insurer to match your circumstances, to get you the best terms possible.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

You should be eligible for standard terms on critical illness cover if your travels outside of the UK are not too long. There is an extra that comes with all of these policies, called waiver of premium, that it’s worthwhile knowing about.

Waiver of premium basically means that if you are ill and unable to work for more than 26 weeks, that the insurer will keep your policy active but not ask you to pay for it until you can go back to work. This is a really good thing to have especially if your income drops and you can’t afford to pay the premiums. But do be aware that this works if you are ill and unable to work, it doesn’t cover you if your work contracts stop.

Our expert advisers will find the right critical illness policy to match your work.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Getting income protection if you are a journalist shouldn’t be a problem. The insurers will need to know some information about your employment status, because in different situations, different income protection policies work out better.

You will probably need to look at more specialist options if you currently live outside of the UK, as income protection with a UK insurer is linked to your UK tax status.

If you are self-employed, it is best to get professional advice about which type of income protection policy to apply for and with which insurers. Your income probably fluctuates a lot and there are specific income protection policies that can support the way that your income works.

Our advisers recommend income protection for people every day and we will be able to let you know exactly what you can have. Get in touch today for a no obligation quotation.

Great company and friendly staff. Everyone that I have spoken too has been fantastic, and all seem to care about their clients too. I am glad that I have dealt with Cura, and although this is my second time round with Cura, I will be back!! (In a good way!! Haha) - 5
