Chronic Kidney Disease & Life Insurance
When you have CKD it is essential that research is done to find the right insurer for you. Arranging life insurance when you have CKD can be tricky and it is our job to make things as simple for you as possible.
The majority of insurers will want to know very specific details about your CKD. The main thing that the insurers want to know is how well your kidneys are working and how much it is affecting your health overall.
To get things started we will ask you:
- When were you diagnosed with CKD?
- Do you know your latest eGFR reading?
- Have you needed surgery?
- What medication do you take?
- Do you require kidney dialysis?
- Has your CKD caused you to have anything like a heart attack or stroke?
- Have you had a kidney transplant?
There are a lot of ways that you can answer these questions and they can all lead to different outcomes for your life insurance. A really key part of finding the right insurer for you is to know your most recent kidney function result, your eGFR reading. Insurers will ideally want your reading to be as high as possible.
When you have CKD life insurance in the UK might be available to you at an increased premium. This never sounds good, but life insurance is usually quite cheap, and the increase is often not as high as people think it will be.
It is also really useful to know if you have been told that what stage of chronic kidney disease that you have reached. The insurer will want to see a report from your GP before offering you insurance and any information like this at the start, means that we can plan your options. The insurer will ask for your permission to speak with your GP and there is no charge to you.

Chronic Kidney Disease & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
When you have CKD it is unlikely that you will be able to arrange critical illness cover within the standard insurance market of the UK. There are specialist options that you can potentially apply for, but they will likely exclude claims linked to the CKD and this is quite an extensive exclusion.
We strongly suggest that you speak with an adviser if you have found a critical illness policy that is offering you automatic acceptance without medical underwriting. There will be specific information in the terms and conditions, that could mean that the policy does not do what you want it to do.

Chronic Kidney Disease & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
You might find that you have more options of income protection, than you do for critical illness cover. This is because there are many ways to build income protection, but it is very important to be clear that a claim will not be paid if you are unable to work due to your CKD.
There are still many situations that might cause you to stop working, that have no connection to your CKD, but it is essential that you are aware that there will be an exclusion. We can discuss this with you and support you to understand the wording of these insurances, so that you can decide if you want income protection.
