Can I get Life Insurance with High Blood Pressure 2023
You are probably going to be asked about whether you have now or have ever been told that you have high blood pressure, when you apply for life insurance. It is one of the standard questions that most insurers will ask in their life insurance applications.
Having well controlled blood pressure does not usually cause any problems for life insurance. You can often have quite a simple application process and have terms for life insurance offered to you quickly.
But, that isn’t always the case so let’s look at things a bit deeper.
High Blood Pressure & Life Insurance
When you speak with one of advisers we will ask you a number of questions about your blood pressure. This is to help us choose the right insurer for you as quickly as possible.
We will ask:
- When were you diagnosed with high blood pressure?
- What was your most recent blood pressure reading?
- When was this taken?
- Do you take any medication?
- Has your treatment or blood pressure reading changed recently?
We may also ask you about whether you have been told that you have high cholesterol or diabetes too. These are also standard health conditions that are on life insurance applications, so we are just checking about any potential links to the high blood pressure.
As long as your high blood pressure is well controlled and you have no other complications you could find that you can get life insurance at normal terms. This means at no added cost.
Medical Reports
If your high blood pressure is well controlled it’s very likely that your life insurance policy will be offered straight away from the online application with most insurers. It would be unusual for an insurer to ask to see a report from your doctor to confirm your health, if well controlled blood pressure is the only disclosure on your application.
The most likely time that an insurer might ask for your permission to speak with your GP is if your blood pressure is quite high even with the treatment you take, or you have other medical conditions. These reports are paid for by the insurer so you won’t be out of pocket if they do ask for this.
Normal Readings Now Still Mean You Need To Say Yes
There are times that we have spoken to people and they have told us that they have no health conditions, but, when we complete the application form they say ‘yes I had high blood pressure, but I don’t now because I’m medicated’.
We can completely understand how people can think this, but when it comes to life insurance applications you must say that you do have high blood pressure. The questions will then change and become interactive so that you can say that your blood pressure is now back within normal ranges.
Sometimes people develop high blood pressure due to a medication and then it disappears when the medication is stopped. Even in this instance it’s best to share these details with the insurer, especially if this has happened in the last 5 years.
The Best Insurer
There is no one best insurer for people that are living with high blood pressure. The good news is that if your blood pressure is well controlled you should be able to choose from quite a few insurers.
Life insurance is one of the simplest policies that can be arranged and most of them mainly do the same thing. Some life insurance policies have slightly different rules when it comes to terminal illness cover, which is part of most insurers life insurance offerings. So cheapest will always be tempting, but make sure that you know the way these extras work.
Our expert advisers will ask you about all the things that we need to know to find the right insurer for you. We are not pushy and will give you the time and space to make a decision that feels right for you. Get in touch for your no obligation quotation today.
