Heart Conditions & Life InsuranceWhen you have a heart condition, many people wonder if they can get life insurance. The next thing that they wonder is how much is it going to cost them.

We know that it isn’t easy figuring out where to start. Which will be the best insurer? Will life insurance cost me a silly amount of money?

We have spent many years building our understanding of medical conditions and using our knowledge of the insurance world, to get people the insurance that they need.

Your need to protect you and your family, is just as much as anyone else’s.

Things we need to know to support you:

  • What is your heart condition?
  • When were you diagnosed with this?
  • What medications do you take?
  • Have you had any surgeries?
  • Are you able to work?

When you apply for life insurance, heart conditions are going to be need to disclosed with most insurers.

The type of heart condition that you have, the strength of your symptoms, medications and treatments will all have an influence on which insurer will be best for you.

Where your heart condition is quite mild, you may be able to get life insurance at normal terms. This means at the basic price for the cover. Good examples of this are mild arrhythmia and innocent heart murmurs.

Heart conditions that insurers can view as more risks are things like heart attacks and cardiomyopathy. With these conditions it is possible that insurers may offer life insurance at non-standard terms. This will mostly likely be some form of a premium increase.

The insurance provide might ask you to give them permission to speak to your GP. This will be so they can see a report that confirms the technical bits around your heart condition, your treatment and how it affects your day to day activities.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Getting critical illness cover when you have a heart condition, can be a little trickier than getting life insurance. This is because many of these policies cover the diagnosis of heart attacks and some other serious heart conditions.

With you already having a heart condition, the insurer will want to assess if it makes you more likely to develop one of the claimable conditions.

People with a mild heart condition may be able to arrange critical illness cover at standard terms. It is quite important to understand that what you may think is a mild heart condition, may not be what an insurer sees as a mild heart condition.

For people that a heart condition that insurers feel is a high risk, it could be that critical illness cover needs to be looked at with more specialist insurance providers.

This may mean that you are offered critical illness cover, with an exclusion for heart related conditions. We know that on the face of it that doesn’t sound great. But you should still be covered for other conditions like cancer, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s diesease.

Our experienced advisers are here to help you every step of the way. We will research the market for you to find the best insurer to support your needs. Your dedicated adviser will go through all the terms and conditions with you, so that you know exactly what you are and are not covered for.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

Income protection can sometimes be available to people that have heart conditions. Income protection is most likely to be offered if you have a mild heart condition, that does not affect your ability to work, or your regular day to day activities.

For people that have a more moderate to higher risk heart condition, insurers may offer the option for an exclusion on the policy. This will mean that the policy will not cover claims relating to your heart. Income protection might also come at an increased premium.

This isn’t always the case though. No two people are the same. It is really important to make sure that research is done specifically for your circumstances.

There are some insurers that will not be able to offer income protection for people that have heart conditions. The main thing here is to focus on the word some. There are many insurers and many options to look at for you, this is where our expert advisers really shine.

What are Heart Conditions

Heart conditions affect many people and come in a range of severities from mild heart arrhythmia to severe heart attacks. Heart conditions are classified by any event or illness that causes the heart to stop functioning for a time or over a long period, at what should be a normal state.

Heart conditions can be both hereditary or first generation illnesses, for the most part they are lifelong conditions that can be controlled effectively through medication and changes in lifestyle.

Common Questions

Yes we can help. We will need to chat through quite a few bits about your heart attack. Things like when it happened, was there a specific cause, was it a silent heart attack, the treatment that you had and if you are fully recovered.

There are a lot of options to look at, but it’s really important for us to have all of this information to hand. Some insurers can be a bit nervous if your heart attack was quite recent and potentially the cause of it. But, this is what we do day in and day out, we will give you all of the options that are available to you.

There are quite a few options that we can look at for you. To be able to give you an idea of what will be available, there are a few things that we will need to chat about.

There will be some questions around the heart transplant itself like the reason you had it, the time since it was done, if there’s any suggestion that it’s being rejected. I will need to chat to you about your overall health and lifestyle too, so that I can properly advise you.

It may be that for a while we need to look at some more specialist options for you. I think sometimes the word specialist can worry people, they immediately think expensive or complicated. That doesn’t have to be the case and I will talk you through all the ins and outs of the cover, so that you can be confident in what you are looking at.
