Bowel Cancer & Life Insurance

When you have had a diagnosis of cancer it is quite common to think about your financial security. Life insurance can be something that you start to consider.

A lot of the times the best life insurance policies will ask details about your medical history, including the cancer. We know that talking about your cancer can be difficult and our advisers are trained to speak with you in a supportive way.

Things we need to know:

  • When were you diagnosed with bowel cancer?
  • How many times have you had bowel cancer?
  • What was the staging of the cancer?
  • What was the grading of the cancer?
  • What treatment did you have (eg chemotherapy or radiotherapy)?
  • Are you fully recovered and free of treatment?
  • When you did last receive treatment?

We ask you all of this information as each of these questions will have an influence on the right insurer and life insurance policy for you.

If you bowel cancer was found and treated in it’s early stages, you could be able to access life insurance at normal terms. This will depend upon when your cancer was diagnosed and when your treatment ended.

As bowel cancer isn’t often diagnosed in it’s early stages, many people will have needed strong treatment and potentially surgery to remove the cancer. For people that have had stage 3 or stage 4 cancer you can find that quite a lot of insurers will increase your premiums for life insurance.

Some insurers might not be able to accept your application, which is why our expert advisers are here to find the right insurer for you.

Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.

Critical illness cover might be available to you but it’s quite likely that there will be an exclusion on the policy.

This exclusion could be specifically for bowel cancer, or it might be a full cancer exclusion. A full cancer exclusion is a big exclusion to have on critical illness cover, so it’s very important to consider if this policy is right for you.

Our advisers are here to explain what options for critical illness cover are available to you, and find the best insurer for you.

Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.

You might be able to access income protection after you’ve had bowel cancer, once you are a few years from having had stronger treatments.

Your options for income protection will be led by the staging and grading of the bowel cancer that you had.  If you are currently working reduced hours as you are recovering from bowel cancer, this could also influence the insurance and insurer that will be right for you.

Our award winning advisers will listen to your circumstances and find the best route to protecting your income.

Common Questions

Hi, I’m so sorry to hear that you have been declined life insurance. We will do everything possible to get you the insurance that you need.

One of our advisers will be in touch with you to talk through your circumstances and discuss the best life insurance options for you. It would be really helpful if you can have to hand the details about your bowel cancer diagnosis such as the staging and grading, and the treatments that you had. You can often find a lot of the information that we need on letters from your oncologist.

Hi, thank you for reaching out to us and I’m sorry to hear about your mum. Insurers are not allowed to ask you about predictive genetic tests that you have had. This means that if you have been tested for Lynch syndrome, purely as a precaution due to your mother’s diagnosis, then this won’t usually come up in a life insurance application.

If you have undergone tests because it is believe that you might have bowel cancer, due to symptoms you are experiencing, then this is different and will often need to be detailed in life insurance applications.
